Rotary Contributes to
Acorn Soupe
By Steven Ebersole

ROTAPLAST

Acorn Soupe
1303 Jefferson Street, Suite 200A, Napa, California 94559

December 20, 2005. Christmas season is moving along quickly this year with wet weather, football, family and friends, in-laws, a few outlaws ("Humbug") shopping, Christmas carols, tons of candy, parties, decorations, commercials promoting diamonds and new cars, but what is most special about this time is the children filled with excitement about Santa and gifts under the tree. It's a time when they are reminded once again that a little newborn was in the care of loving parents in a stressful place and time so long ago. A child hopes for many things but nothing more than being loved and treated special by the people who brought them into the world. Children thrive on life and love blessedly mixed together. Don't we all?

INDUCTION

Although membership in Rotary is down nationally, our club has a healthy influx of new members who are motivated to serve. We are honored to welcome our newest member into our local club, Doug Durard, who is sponsored by Lydia Wilson.  Doug is an attorney who recently moved to St. Helena with his wife and children. Doug's wife whom he met while working at Togo's and married in three weeks time is the new assistant minister at the Methodist church in town. He has already weathered a season in St. Helena Bocce ball and is now a proud member of St. Helena Rotary. Welcome, Doug.

PROGRAM: ACORN SOUPE

Jeff Marty, a self described behind the scenes sort of person was excited to speak to us today on behalf of the youth development program called Acorn Soupe, a program designed to an enhance children's awareness of  nature and promote outdoor activities in K-12 school age students. He says it's so much easier to talk about something you're passionate about. The program was founded by Sandra Perry and currently reaches 1200 students per year. Commonly referred to as environmental education, the main physical activity being hiking, the children are taught the sciences of nature. Some students have never hiked in a state park before joining the program. Possibly one of the negative effects of the No Child Left Behind Act is that in an effort to circle the wagons on educational fundamentals other forms of education fall out of focus. Enrichment programs such as Acorn Soupe, double the size of 2 years ago, are picking up the slack and growing in popularity.

Acorn Soupe focuses on outdoor programs that not only teach but inspire young minds to explore cultural history, conservation of national lands, community, gaining a sense of place and cycles of nature. You are encouraged to join in on a field trip and help in connecting students to the land. They offer residential summer camps. Jeff finished by reading some poetry written by several students that had participated recently.

PROGRAM: STATE OF COUNTY OF NAPA

Diane Dillon
announced speaker Pamela Kindig, Auditor-Controller for the County of Napa, who by the way, is not only bachelor's prepared in two fields but also has a passion for "riding roller coasters". Pamela's presentation, State of County of Napa, enlightened those present concerning the Napa County budget and the financial politics that exist between the County and the State of California. People were definitely paying attention, as there were many credible questions which followed the presentation.

Rotary Membership Moments

Week 27 – January 1 – 7, 2006
Have a new member education program, call it a fire side chat or a new member assembly, make it part of the induction process into your club.  Invite new members and their partners to an evening of Rotary education; highlight one or two avenues of service.  Give them the in-depth knowledge that will make them want to stay in Rotary.

Educate and Retain Members

Happy New Year
