ROTARY CLUBS RAISE FUNDS FOR
TSUNAMI VICTIMS
By Polly Keegan

KATHLEEN PATTERSON - Club President 2004-2005

KATHLEEN PATTERSON
Club President 2004-2005

On January 11, Norm Manzer of the Calistoga Club was present to announce that the Rotary District had raised $6000 for the tsunami victims, and two representatives of the Napa Rotary have gone to the tsunami site. And, back home, President Kathleen read a thank you letter from the Volunteer Services at Napa Valley Hospital, thanking the St. Helena Rotary, once again for its yearly contribution via Joice Beatty. Just recently Jake Scheideman collected $3500 for the young local girl who has become a leukemia victim. This club is truly generous!

John Sales has just had invasive surgery, fortunately the tests were benign, but he is still recuperating. We wish him a strong and speedy recovery.

POLLY KEEGAN

POLLY KEEGAN

Birthday, and Polly Keegan is vying with Steve Yost to have some members arrive at her house on Thursday to wrap boxes as decoration for the Winter Ball Birthday Party. Every Thursday evening Polly will need about a half dozen people to wrap about a zillion boxes. Come at 7:30 pm and leave by 9:00. Please. 1417 Kearney St. (second from the corner on Adams and Kearney), 963-2238.

President Kathleen asked members to try to find more live auction items, e.g. does anyone own a home in some exotic place, here or abroad? Does anyone have a special relationship with a particular winery? Try and think of some wonderful new auction concept and pass it on to Rob Andreae while Paul Krsek is on vacation.

Bellringers:

Bob Harrington was the finemaster.

  • Loren Gardner is celebrating his first year of marriage, and…he has had lasic surgery and loves it!
  • Gene Armstead just returned from a great vacation in Hawaii.
  • Dave Brotemarkle just returned from a week at Crested Butte where he skied in 2 feet of powder.
  • Phil Toohey's son has just been named one of the head trainers for the Olympic Ski Team; he is on his way to Turino, Italy.

PROGRAM: ST. HELENA FITNESS AND HEALTH CENTER

Guest speaker and owner of St. Helena Fitness and Health Center, Nelson Braby, is the only exercise physiologist in St. Helena.

NELSON BRABY, owner of St. Helena Fitness and Health Center

NELSON BRABY

Nelson's bottom line premise is that exercising will ensure that you live a functioning active life, for the rest of your life. Exercise will help you age successfully. It is the key to reversing the decline in memory and function. Brain scans show slower loss of brain tissue and preservation of muscle and bone mass. Exercise reduces anxiety and depression, lowers the incidence of many types of cancer, lowers the risk of coronary artery disease, and reduces the incidence of stroke.

Sensible eating is the other requirement of a fitness regimen. To lose a pound, you must expend 3500 more calories than you intake. Nelson's advice for healthy eating is to keep your glucose level in a healthy zone throughout the day:

  • Drink enough water
  • Eat breakfast
  • Eat a mid-morning snack
  • Lunch – focus on protein source
  • Mid-afternoon snack
  • Dinner

ROTARY IS AROUND THE WORLD
HELPING IN TIMES OF NEED!
By Jim Meehan

Following opening ceremonies on January 4, there were introductions of visitors and guests: Bob Graham, new CFO for the C.I.A., was Rex Stults' guest. Additional guests included Connie O'Shea and Marge Wilcox both asked to address the club membership about the earthquake and tsunami events of the past few weeks.

Connie O'Shea and her husband were vacationing in Thailand, at a Phuket Island resort when the first wave of water washed into their hotel. She described that their initial impression was that a high tide condition was hitting the coastline. As the second wave approached and moved onto shore, everyone began running, moving in mass to higher ground. She described in vivid detail the massive destruction done by the second wave. She and her husband were evacuated to the other side of the island later in the day. They were to stay in a hotel there temporarily until they could be ferried by boat to a mainland airport. At the hotel's breakfast the day after the tsunami, there was a letter for each guest from Rotary International telling them of the humanitarian efforts being assembled to aid the local population – money, clothes, medical supplies and blood. Connie feels that all of our lives will be forever changed by this event. She was extremely complimentary of the Rotary organization and offered congratulations to all its members worldwide.

Marge Wilcox, representing the local Red Cross organization, went on to say that by December 31, 2004, over $30 Million in aid had been directed to areas hardest hit by the tsunami. $25 Million was for food supplies, and $5 Million to non-food areas, mainly hygiene related. At present, the Red Cross is seeking donations of money rather than to help the stricken areas. President Kathleen Patterson outlined several methods of contributing to the humanitarian efforts. One way is to make a donation to the Rotary Foundation, that contribution would be recognized as money put towards an individuals' Paul Harris Fellowship Award and then funneled on to the Red Cross organization.

Following the Welcome Singers, there were announcements. Don Scully and others talked about the upcoming events scheduled by the Fitness and Recreation group. There is a hike Saturday, January 8 to Mt. St. Helena and the following Saturday, January 15, Mike Thomas will lead a 20-mile ride starting from Napa JC parking lot at 9:30 am.

ALSTON HAYNE

ALSTON HAYNE

Natalie Klug, did not draw the black marble. Alston Hayne was this week's fine master – his questions about completing the rhymes of past Burma Shave signs was a close shave for several members, and it cost them.

Program: The Napa River – Flood Protection
Project Update

Speaker: Barry Martin, Public Information Officer, Napa County Flood Control and Water Conservation Dist.

Barry Martin had spoken to our group last year about the progress of the flood control project. At this session, he provided a PowerPoint update. His presentation covered the Maxwell Bridge replacement with a grade separation (we'll be driving on it soon); the terracing and trail on the east side from Kennedy Park to Hospital Creek which was recently completed; and the terracing from Hospital Creek to Tulocy Creek, which is to be completed by winter 2005. Barry also talked about the railroad bridges over the River and Bypass Channels, and the First Street Bridge over the Napa River. Construction should be on schedule to start in the summer of 2005 and be completed by fall of 2006.

Barry was asked several questions about the status of various St. Helena/Napa River projects which he deferred to the local community leaders for that information. If you want to follow the Napa River project, he suggested that you log onto www.napaflooddistrict.org for current updates or call 707-259-8600 with specific questions of interest or concern.

Barry believes this project will do much for the future of the city of Napa and the valley beyond. Specifically it will provide: 1) Safety, through flood protection; 2) Stewardship, through environmental restoration; and, 3) Prosperity by aiding in economic development. We are seeing many of these results today. The project will likely continue into 2009.

A McQUIDDY FAREWELL DINNER
By Steve Yost

INGE & JERRY MCQUIDDY

INGE & JERRY MCQUIDDY

Forty Rotarians and their spouses/significant others gathered at The Silverado Brewing Company to enjoy a farewell dinner with Jerry and Inge McQuiddy on Sunday, January 16th. It was a fun occasion but a tinge of sorrow was also evident as we will miss them so much. They are moving to the Villages in San Jose.

Linda Andreae did a wonderful job in organizing the dinner and she even arranged for balloons attached to our tables. We feasted on a 3-course meal accompanied by lots of wine brought by our members.

Some notable guests turned up to honor Jerry. They included DG Bruce Campbell and his wife Helaine, Past DG Franz Wartenweiler, and DG Elect-Elect Erna Stevenson. Several of our own past presidents were in attendance, as well as President Kathleen Patterson and President Elect Bill Word.

Everyone wishes you well Jerry and Inge!!!

JIM MEEHAN TAKES 1ST PLACE
Texas Hold'Em Night Is Great Success
By Steve Yost

JIM MEEHAN

CHECK-BET-RAISE-RERAISE were words heard regularly in the fellowship hall of Grace Episcopal Church on the night of January 13th as 22 Rotarians and guests gathered to learn how to play the world's most popular poker game — Texas Hold'Em. The church facilities proved to be quite comfortable and a good location to hold this event.

The event was hosted by Joice Beatty (who also provided refreshments) and Poker Director Steve Yost (who arranged for all the poker equipment and gave instruction on how to play). President Kathleen Patterson and Barbara Yost greeted people upon their arrival. Dealers were recruited and included Rudy Papale and Tim Coon, as well as guests Al Cali and Phil Flickinger.

During the evening there were several memorable moments, including when Dave Moreland ended with a rare royal straight flush, when Ron Scullati (at Steve's urging) with pocket Kings kept betting into Kelly Crane who just happened to have pocket Aces, and when Joice Beatty with her straight on the river destroyed Wendell Laidley's 3 9's and Frank Toller's 3 Aces.

DAVID MORELAND

DAVID MORELAND

Each person received 100 chips to start with and the few who ran out were issued another 100. At the end of the evening Jim Meehan won 1 st prize with his awesome 430 (what were the others at his table doing?). At an adjacent table Dave Moreland ran over the opposition with 332 to take 2nd place and Kathleen Patterson came in 3rd with 186. At the third table one chair was occupied by the dealer who was taking a break, so during the course of the evening all dealers played off that stack with the end result they had 152 chips.

As Rotarians were leaving many said they hoped to have another evening of poker and comradeship.
