Fabulous Valentine Lunch
at Silverado Brewery!
By Kathy Zelazny

BILL WORD

BILL WORD

I would estimate that about 100 people, made up of Rotarians and their sweethearts, attended the Club's annual Valentine's Day luncheon at Silverado Brewing on February 8. Bill Word started the lunch off by recognizing the presence of John and Joan Sales, and President Kathleen Patterson . We were all happy to see John and are thankful for his full recovery from recent surgery. Bill then thanked Michael from Silverado Brewing for providing such a wonderful setting and menu for the luncheon. Father Mac gave a brief, but effective benediction. After giving thanks, Bill had the Rotarians in attendance introduce themselves and their sweethearts. I would estimate that two-thirds of the Rotarian membership enjoyed the partnership of a spouse or significant other. But singles attended as well, and enjoyed every bit of the meal and camaraderie. Of pointed valentine interest is that at least four couples attended who had each been married over half a century:

Happy Valentine's Day

§ Charles Bell and Peggy (50+ years)
§ Dale Smith and Lillian (54 years)
§ Roger Adams and Jody (54 years)
§ Rudy Papale and Catherine (55 years)

Michael Fradelizio, owner/chef of Silverado Brewery presented us with a fabulous lunch - gourmet preparation and presentation all the way from the candlelit décor to the incredible chocolate dessert. He served a wonderful 'Roasted Rack of Heirloom Pork' (Niman Ranch), and a Wild Mushroom and Truffle Risotto that were out of this world. Michael served a Scharfen Berger Chocolate Pate with Raspberry Coulis and Fresh Mint for dessert. We are indeed fortunate to have Michael as the Rotary Club chef every Tuesday at lunch.

Rex Stults surprised us by introducing an unexpected guest speaker, John Anderson. John and his wife own Woodhouse Chocolates in St. Helena. The idea of going into the chocolate business came to him at the time that his family was selling their wine business (S. Anderson), and he and his wife went to see the film "Chocolat." John talked about his experiences in the wine industry and his foray into the chocolate business. We were lucky enough to enjoy some samples of John's fine confections that he brought along, and passed around to everyone.

BELLRINGERS:

ELAINE JOHN

KELLY CRANE

ELAINE JOHN

KELLY CRANE

Elaine John announced that St. Helena Hospital had collected a record $6 million this year.

Kelly Crane had great steelhead fishing in Seattle.

Rob Andreae had a successful first radio show (3-4 pm every Thursday).

Joel Toller had a great trip to Mexico.

Main focus these days is the preparation for Winter Ball 2005, the 100th birthday celebration of Rotary International. Many announcements regarding the need for:

  • Bottles of wine to contribute to the 100-bottle Rotary roundup for a live auction lot. Wine for the 100-bottle lot go to Jeff Whitehead at 963-7627 or jpwhitey9@yahoo.com, or drop-offs at 1244 Spring St. Please remember to put you name on the donated bottle.

  • Volunteers for the night of the Ball – Joel Toller at 963-1222 or  jtoller@napanet.net needs 50-70 volunteers.

  • Volunteers for Decorating – Polly Keegan at 963-2238 or innkeeper@adagioinn.com . There are two main needs for the decorating volunteers:

Show up anytime between 10 am and 4 pm on the 24th (Thursday) and 25th (Friday) to ensure items are collected and placed on silent auction tables, executing the bid sheets and decorating both the dining tables and the silent auction tables.

25 live auction lots need persons to organize and implement the display and marketing of the lots. Each live auction lot will have its own 24-inch round table, and each needs someone to be responsible – will you take on at least one auction lot to be responsible for? Live auction items are on the rotary website
www.sthelenarotary.org/winterball, and they are also listed here in the Nairator.

    PDF, 3 Megs

  • Kelly Crane is collecting items from Calistoga, as they are recipients of the Boys and Girls Club monies that are received from Winter Ball donations. Any ideas? See Kelly at 963-5096 or moneyman@value.net.

Following their pre-Rotary, cold-chair, weekly meeting, each member of the Winter Ball Committee was called forward to confess to the general membership what she or he had been up to on behalf of the big event.
