JEFF WHITEHEAD

JEFF WHITEHEAD

Lisa Marie Andersen mentioned that she still has available tickets for the Winter Ball as of today's meeting. She added that she must give a firm number to the caterer by Wednesday, so if anyone had friends, family or interested parties wanting to attend that they must decide by Wednesday, February 23rd.

Andy Bartlett read a letter from Rotary exchange student, Annie Koscielak, who is spending the year in Brazil. She wished everyone her best and thanked the club for its support in providing her this great opportunity.

Jeff Whitehead reminded everyone to bring their bottle of wine to donate to the 100 bottle lot for the Winter Ball. Prior to the start of the meeting the lot was still 40 bottles short of the 100 bottle goal. Jeff asked that perhaps some of those who had already donated could find another bottle in their wine cellar. Mike Smith of Sunshine Foods offered to add an additional case to the cause and several other Members offered additional wine for the lot.

BACK FROM NICARAGUA

JAKE SCHEIDEMAN

JAKE SCHEIDEMAN

Jake Scheideman, Jeff Epps, Tim Coon, Ron Scullati and Dave Moreland have just returned from their latest working trip to Nicaragua. In addition to participating in the ongoing construction of the new homes in the village, the town's septic system was also repaired. The group worked hand in hand with the village construction group and members of the families that will be housed there once the project is completed.

FINE MASTER

Texas Hold 'Em was the central theme of Steve Yost's finemaster segment. Among those falling prey to Steve's questioning were Jake Scheideman, Jeff Epps, Tim Coon, Ron Scullati, Dave Moreland, John Sales, Kelly Crane and Diane Dillon. Bellringers included Rex Stults, Ron Scullati, Dave Moreland, Jake Scheideman and Norm Mitroff.

Kathleen Patterson auctioned off a Rotary motif necktie and scarf that had been donated by Joice Beatty. Carol Sobczak, at $50.00, was the successful bidder.

PROGRAM: GETTING YOUR LIFE IN BALANCE

Rex Stults introduced Fran Miller as the day's featured speaker. Ms. Miller holds a Master's degree in anthropology and has led professional teams on expeditions and scientific pursuits for over 16 years. She has been an entrepreneur for over ten years with experience as a manager, lecturer, workshop leader, artist and salesperson.

Her focus at today's meeting was to explain her Full Circle Fulfillment Coaching program. The full circle concept encourages participants to examine and analyze the balance they maintain in their daily lives. She focuses on eight different segments of life and tries to help her clients keep these individual areas on an equal footing. The areas include; personal growth/spirituality, health, career, money, fun /recreation, friends & family, relationships and physical environment. Each of these eight segments represents approximately 12% of the balance wheel. By keeping these segments in balance, Ms. Miller believes that individuals should experience well balanced, happy and successful lives. Any area that takes up too much or too little of the balance wheel should be worked on and modified.

Our society is all too often based on what we do rather than what we are. She commented that this often puts the career and money segments out of line, often with family and relationships taking a back seat.

Ms. Miller closed her presentation by encouraging those present to remember to keep the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of everyday life in focus and in equal balance.

St. Helena Public Schools
Benefit from Winter Ball
By Jim Haslip

On February 15, 2005, the Rotary Welcome Singers set the spirit of warm fellowship. This week, Craig Anderson played the piano for the sextet of Tony Albright, Gene Armstead, Dave Brotemarkle, Jonathan Briano, Suzan Rada, and Don Scully. Kathleen shared an orthopedic medical story from Uganda that reminds us that "it's a great day to be a Rotarian!"

POLLY KEEGAN

Preparations for the Winter Ball were emphasized. Polly Keegan is putting together displays for the live auction lots and asked for assistance. Jeff Whitehead continues the effort to gather a 100 wine bottle lot.

Mike Thomas reported that 5 bike riders enjoyed the outing last weekend. The fitness activities are on hold until after the Ball. Dick Osborn reported the tragic death of a Pacific Union student and asked for our prayers.

Bill Word was thanked for organizing the Valentine's Day luncheon at the Silverado Brewing Company. Jonathan Briano failed in an attempt to draw the black marble but lead the parade of three prize winners from the drawing, including Bill Word and Steve Ebersole.

NEW MEMBER: A warm welcome was given to our new member who was inducted, Bob

STEPHEN CARBONE

STEPHEN CARBONE

Graham. He is the Chief Financial Officer at the Culinary Institute. Alston Hayne presided, assisted by Rex Stults , the sponsor of Bob Graham.

Stephen Carbone served as Fine Master and extracted forced contributions with such timely questions as, "When do baby's knee caps first appear?"

PROGRAM: THE PUBLIC SCHOOL FOUNDATION

Del Britton was our speaker on the Public School's Foundation. It receives $25,000 each year from the Winter Ball as part of its pool of money that goes to grants for teachers. They plan to distribute $118,000 this year, which represents about a third of the requests. Projects involve all four schools and include field studies, museum experiences, science equipment, art supplies, the Academic Decathlon, Authors' Workshops, and reading supplements. When they receive renewal requests, they may fund a project for up to 3 years with the expectation that the school district will budget it if it proves to be indispensable. About $40,000 of their income is from the earnings from an Endowment trust of approximately $1M. They hope to expand the trust in the future because it is a permanent source of grant money. Each spring the Foundation holds a presentation and wine tasting on the uses for the grants as an appreciation to the donors.
