ANNOUNCEMENTS

Multiple Myeloma Research 5K Run/Walk

Charlotte Williamson and Toni Heydlauff
spoke about the upcoming 5K Run/Walk to be held on April 9th, which will benefit Multiple Myeloma research. The event will begin at Crissy Field, in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge. Charlotte and Toni encouraged the club members to support the team that will be running under the St. Helena Rotary Club flag. Judging by the number of members sporting the yellow participant caps at the meeting, approximately 20 of our Rotarians will take part in this year's event. Over the last four years, many of these same folks have run in this annual event. Multiple Myeloma, though a rare disease, has directly affected a number of St. Helena Rotarians and their family members. Toni and Charlotte passed donation sheets and gave the club an opportunity to donate to this very worthy cause. As an additional incentive to support the club's participants, for every $20 donated for the event, a chance goes into the hat for a raffle drawing. The winner will be hosted at Toni Heydlauff's home with a dinner for six.

Valley Men Who Cook

CAROLINE UPTON and JIM SMITH

CAROLINE UPTON and JIM SMITH
St. Helena Chamber of Commerce

Jim Smith
and Caroline Upton spoke about the annual Valley Men Who Cook event that will be held at the Culinary Institute on Sunday, May 1st. Jim informed the group that there is space for several more cooking teams. He also encouraged everyone to circle the date and make a point to attend this fun event. This year's proceeds will go to the continued tsunami relief effort in Sri Lanka. Caroline, who arrived in Sri Lanka ten days after the devastating tsunami, saw firsthand the enormity of the destruction and the hardships that the Sri Lankans face on a day to day basis. Housing needs and long-term rebuilding are now being addressed, and will continue to be a priority for years to come. Although the minute by minute media coverage of the disaster has abated, much still needs to be accomplished. Caroline is working directly with the Colombo Rotary Club to help. Funds raised at the Valley Men Who Cook event will be delivered personally by Caroline during her next visit to Colombo.

Rotary Peace Center/Spring Seminar

Kathleen Patterson
informed the group about this event to be held at UC Berkeley on Sunday, April 10, 2005 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.

ALSTON HAYNE

ALSTON HAYNE

April is Volunteer Month

Alston Hayne
asked everyone to select some volunteer activity in the community and make a contribution of time.

Virginia Tuechert

Jake Scheideman
thanked all those Rotary members who responded to his request to help Virginia Tuechert and her family after they sustained the loss of their home due to fire. Though no one in the family was hurt, the historic home was gutted by the blaze. Once again, Rotary was on hand to help those in need.

Golf Outing and Texas Hold 'Em

Alan Fowler
informed those present that the date for the Fellowship Golf Outing has been changed to April 14th , with 11:30 AM tee times. As a result the Texas Hold 'Em event scheduled for the same day has been postponed and will be rescheduled said Steve Yost.

PHIL TOOHEY

PHIL TOOHEY

THE ELUSIVE BLACK MARBLE

Phil Toohey bought a long string of raffle tickets in hopes of drawing the black marble and its $100.00 prize. Though he had a 50% chance of success with only two marbles remaining, he failed to pocket the black marble. All the marbles go back into the box for next meeting's drawing.

BELLRINGERS

Craig Anderson reiterated the thanks expressed by Jake Scheideman for the help with the Tuechert family.

Doug Ernst lauded Rotary for helping him gather information about the recent Dick Cheney visit to St. Helena.

PROGRAM

Silverado/Napa Valley Red Cross
Speaker: Marge Dixon

Beverly Davies-Mes introduced Marge Dixon, the Executive Director of the Silverado/Napa Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. Ms. Dixon gave the group a brief history of the American Red Cross and then explained its function in the St. Helena area.

MARGE DIXON

MARGE DIXON
Executive Director
Silverado/Napa Valley Red Cross

The organization was founded in 1861 by Clara Barton, to provide battlefield medical aid for Civil War soldiers. This service was provided up until World War II. Now it provides disaster relief, teaches disaster preparedness and provides support for military families.

Since last July, the organization has touched 10,000 individuals in the Napa Valley. This was accomplished in a variety of ways including helping those affected by fire, assistance with search and rescue operations, teaching CPR, training lifeguards and providing durable medical equipment. The Red Cross provides immediate relief, but is not set up to provide sustained help.

Though chartered by Congress, the organization is funding solely through donations. The local chapter has an annual budget of $316,000. Kathleen Patterson encouraged Ms. Dixon to apply for a Rotary grant. Ms. Dixon invited all club members to attend their annual fundraising event that will be held on August 6, 2005 at Merryvale. Though funding is very important, volunteerism is crucial to the organization. Spontaneous as well as scheduled volunteers are necessary. Ms. Dixon said that good board members are always needed, and that a number of former and current St. Helena Rotary Club members have served on the Red Cross board.

Ms. Dixon told the group that all donations earmarked for the local chapter are used within the Napa Valley. The local chapter office is located at 1474 Oak Avenue here in St. Helena.

PROGRAM

Community Foundation of the Napa Valley
Speaker: Terence Mulligan

President Terence Mulligan discussed the Foundation. It has about $10M in assets supported by many families who, oftentimes, are desirous of making one-time large donations for charitable purposes in this area. The Foundation goal is to grow about ten-fold in the next decade in order to expand their local giving, which is approximately 15-20% of their assets. They have a two-part grant cycle, in the spring and fall. Their greatest recipient group is teachers who submit one page proposals for their special needs.

"Let it shine"
on the St. Helena High School Jazz Choir

BILL WORD

BILL WORD

March 15, 2005: Bill Word did a yeoman job in substitution for our vacationing Club President Kathleen Patterson. He had just returned from the Sunnyvale seminar on PETS (President Elect Seminar) and was most proud and energized to represent the St. Helena Rotary Club. Following opening ceremonies, there were introductions of visitors and guests: Ms. Sandra Hicks and her mother joined us from Anchorage, Alaska. And, David Moreland's Mother "Mary" was on her first time visit to St. Helena from her home in Arizona.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SUZAN RADA

SUZAN RADA

Suzan Rada will host a walk/run from her home this Saturday and Jim Meehan told the group that the best ride of the new year had happened this past Saturday with seven Rotary members and friends joining in on the 23-mile trek through the Pope Valley ending at Atena Springs G.C. for lunch, good time had by all . . . . let's see more members out for the next ride on Saturday April 16th. Charlotte Williamson told the club that there was an April 7 Run/Walk and to please contact her for more information. Polly Keegan needed some new reporters and by nomination of Jeff Epps, Doug Ernst was elected as a new "club reporter" for the Nairator. Phil Toohey recognized Club Member Norm Alumbaugh for his contribution of 8400 cases of wine to aid in the procurement of wheel chairs for those that are in needed. There will be an all Napa Rotary Clubs BBQ and wine social held on May 1, 2 pm to 6 pm at the Connelly Ranch in Napa, put it on your calendar.

ORTWIN KRUEGER

ORTWIN KRUEGER

The Black Ball was not drawn by Doug Ernst. Today's Fine Master Ortwin Krueger picked St. Pat jokes from the Internet and Irish club members to deliver them for fines of lesser or greater amounts. Likely, the best joke dealt with the Irishman that used the German to cover his back for a flogging in Saudi Arabia. You miss the meeting, you miss the jokes … sorry!

PROGRAM

The St. Helena High School Jazz Choir
Music Leader: Craig Bond

The Meeting was adjourned to the adjacent music room to see the local High School songsters entertain the Rotary Club Members. The opening medley was from the Broadway musical Rent "Seasons of Love" that was followed by a Paul Simon score "Song for the Asking." Following these opening works that were well received by the Rotary Members, Craig Bond spoke about the $29,000 gift of last year from the Winter Ball proceeds.

The monies went to fund various needy music projects including choral risers at the elementary school level, new folders for the middle school, CD's and a Karaoke machine plus new matching shirts and pants for the high school choir. Another big purchase was the addition of equipment to accompany the choir. A new keyboard, drums and bass guitar and some aided in the funding of trips to sing in Anaheim, California and Vancouver, B. C.

The closing songs were: "If I could write a book" from the musical Pal Joey and a gospel "I'm going to let it shine."

Much thanks to All!
