March 16, 2006. Attending were Sobczak, Meibeyer, Toohey, Haslip, Sales, Keegan, Patterson, Mitroff and John heard, but absent directors Armstead, Rada, Scheideman, Crane, Adams, Bylund and Yost did not hear President Bill's 12:04 call to order. There was quick approval of prior minutes and positive  treasurer's and attendance reports.

Several grant applications were considered but put over for more information and proper applications.

Club Service: Baseball game outing tickets have been purchased.

Community Service - Haslip .  Volunteers will be recruited for May 1st opening of Farmers Market food pickups.

Vocational Service - Toohey.  Jr. Achievement is now in progress with several Rotarians teaching.

Membership - Meibeyer. Resignation of John Harrington regretfully accepted. LOA from 5/1 to 6/30 approved for Wendell Laidley. Membership is now at 90, with prospective new members in the wings.  Red Badger program about complete.

Foundation - John.  The Club has sent $14,664 to R.I. for Paul Harris contributions. $161.14 per member.  Only one club in our District has bested that.  Service Above Self plaque approved for Allison Gooch who personally raised $7,000 for Siberia project.

A Destination Strategy for Napa Valley
By Father Mac

March 28, 2006. It was a rainy, dreary day in beautiful downtown St. Helena as Rotarians gathered for their weekly meeting. Spirits were hardly dampened and attendance was good. The pledge was recited, the invocation was offered, and we were off and running.

Several guests were introduced. Among them Jim Smith from the Wine Country Inn. Jim was with us to promote participation in the Valley Men Who Cook event on May 8. Cooking will begin at 8 a.m. and they will begin serving at 11 a.m., so it's more of a lunch than in the past. Jim was looking for helpers.

Frank Sottile put $100.00 toward his Paul Harris for the approval of the Boys & Girls Club building project. It's been a long haul and things are finally on their way.

Phil Toohey and Wendell Laidley both chipped in to sponsor students to the tune of $360.00 each.

Charlotte Williamson, Roger Adams, Steve Carbone and Jeff Epps were each fined $20.00 for various and sundry grievances by fine master Wendell Laidley who confessed he was told about being fine master that day after he showed up for lunch! On short notice, he did a fine job.

BETH CARMICHAEL AND DOROTHY LIND SALMON

BETH CARMICHAEL AND DOROTHY LIND SALMON

When the tide rises, all the boats float. It behooves everyone in the Napa Valley to better promote and market our beloved wine industry. The 'engines' that really drive the economy of the Napa Valley are wine and tourism, and that's exactly what Dorothy and Beth were with us to talk about.

The goal of the NVEDC is to develop a strategy for marketing the Valley. They are working hard with the brightest minds available to study the statistics and come up with a plan that would be county wide and comprehensive. As a destination site, it is imperative that we be aggressive in order to remain competitive with other destinations. The whole point is to optimize the visitor experience for both residents and visitors.

Beth outlined a five-step process by which an accurate snapshot of the industry might be taken. The process includes an accurate analysis of

  1. the destination assessment
  2. destination promise
  3. destination blueprint
  4. destination culturization and
  5. destination advantage. With an adequate understanding of these five a strategy can be developed for marketing.

Bottom line is the need for the Valley to be proactive about promoting itself. For more information, the email is partnership@napavalley.org, and the web site is www.destinationstrategy.com.

President Word thanked our speakers with a bottle of the local product and dismissed us.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Pax, MAC+

The Rotary International
Running & Fitness Leaders
By Jim Haslip

April 4, 2006. Suzan Rada is about to become the International Chair of the Rotary Fellowship for Running and Fitness, which currently has 52 members. Servaas Mes is the editor of their newsletter. Suzan pointed out that the key global health issue, aside from malnutrition, is childhood obesity, which has become a worldwide epidemic. There has been a rapid increase in the incidences of Type II diabetes. Suzan's focus will be education. She hopes to get each Rotary Club president to read a health note at each meeting on such topics as eating habits, exercise, and reading labels for sugar and sodium. Who said, "My encouragement to all is to get off the couch. It will pass the 4 Way Test every time." A hint: He ran a marathon the day before leaving for Israel. Another hint: He is often known as Father Mac! During May, Personal Health Challenges will be encouraged for each of our members. Possibilities could be to reduce weight, reduce blood pressure, or stop smoking. Steve Ebersole and family have taken up cycling and thanked Jake for his great service.

SERVAAS MES AND SUZAN RADA

SERVAAS MES AND SUZAN RADA

Servaas, improvising as our speaker, discussed the latest medical thoughts on cancer which includes integrating holistic health with the traditional model. He noted the phenomenon of a number of people with tumors having them disappear without treatment. What did they do? Typically, the core body temperature for a cancer patient remains steady during the day, while it fluctuates for healthy people. Those cured had been horribly sick for a period of time, which could have triggered the immune system. Researchers want to look at ways to give the immune system a boost. What are the best ways to build up the immune system? How can we get our body temperatures to rise in the morning? Perhaps it may be beneficial to moderate our use of anti-biotics so that the natural immune system becomes stronger. What are the spiritual, mental, and emotional sides of health and healing? We may benefit from meditation, mindfulness, diet, and exercise. How does stress affect the body and what are our responses to it?

We found out that President Bill is still interested in our wearing our Rotary pins. Who said? "A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can count of the support of Paul." "Giving money to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to a teenager." "Government is a great fiction in which everyone endeavors to live at the expense of everyone else." "I don't make the jokes; I just watch the government and report the facts." "Just because you don't take an interest in politics doesn't mean that politics won't take an interest in you." ""No man's life, liberty, or property is safe while the legislature is in session." "The government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with an endless appetite at one end and no responsibility at the other end." "A government that is big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you've got." Steve Carbone will give you the answers the next time he is Fine Master.

Doug Ernst learned to play the game of golf in one lesson from Jonathan. Many of the rest of us could use that lesson. Jonathan reminded us of the Multiple Myeloma Run on April 23.

Ron McGowan celebrated his birthday by winning the raffle. Did you know he has been in the club since 1972? He served as President 30 years ago!

Suzan Rada asked us to save the date of May 5 for the Farm Worker's Golf Tournament.

April 26 is the Giant's baseball game, arranged by Steve Yost.

Past president, Lee Gustafson, visited from Stockton. Howard Haupt joined us from Napa Sunrise. Doug Thompson was the guest of Jonathan.

Tim Doran was recognized for arranging the Symphony reception which helped recruit 20 new subscribers.

PUC Students Donate

By Ima Holcomb

IMA HOLCOMB

IMA HOLCOMB

April 11, 2006. Pledge: Ima Holcomb. Invocation: Steve Yost

Lunch was served and President Bill Word brought the meeting to order.

We had a visiting Rotarian from the Orange County Sunrise club, Mary Jeffries. Andy Bartlett was back in St. Helena and visiting from Roy, Australia, and Steve Ebersole introduced a teacher from St. Helena High School who spoke regarding the past volunteers from Rotary who have participated in the Senior English Projects and judging of presentations.

President Bill Word stated that we were going to deviate from our normal schedule. At this time Dick Osborn took the podium and asked the Rotarians to read line #3 of the 4 part test regarding service. He then recounted a story of a day at PUC when Jake Scheideman spoke to the students and demonstrated "service" beyond self. After Jake's Nicaragua presentation to the students, one of the faculty announced that he was going to donate his salary of $1,000 to Jake's Nicaraguan effort and challenged the students and staff to donate what they could to contribute to building another home in Nicaragua. Dick Osborn presented Jake with a check for $8,388.25.

Suzan Rada brought everyone's attention to the distributed Running & Fitness newsletter and asked that fellow Rotarian's note the back page for enrollment into the International Fellowship of Running & Fitness Rotarians. Norman Mitroff offered to bill everyone through the monthly statement. It appeared that Suzan received a good response and sign up from the members. Norman Mitroff announced "Opening Day" for the St. Helena Farmers Market, Friday May 5, 2006! There will a live band and other activities… Come one, come all! Elaine John announced Paul Harris awards would be presented 05/23/06. And stated 20 members have met their Paul Harris $125 commitment expectation for the year. Charlotte Williamson reminded everyone of the "Yellow Team for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation", Sunday, April 23, 2006. Jeff Epps also spoke of how much fun the event can be for everyone! Phil Toohey reminded everyone of "All Club Social" lunch/picnic for surrounding Rotary clubs to be held at Crane Park, Saturday, May 7th!

Suzan Rada was the proud winner!

PROGRAM:

Sulphur Creek Water Shed

Our speaker this week was Dwayne Leong, Sustainable Architect, educating the members on the history and importance of the Sulphur Creek Water Shed. We learned, our very own Sulphur Creek Water Shed (SCWS) is part of the St. Helena Community Forum where Vision, Research and Education with Collaboration has been elevated to prominence through Geothermologist, Joe Wheaton's PhD Thesis.  The SCWS has a direct impact on "climate change" being experienced worldwide. The members were treated to a slide show depicting the historic changes of Sulphur Creek and an understanding of how the city of St. Helena is situated at the top of an Alluvial Fan. We learned a bit of the geological and ecological history of the creek and the importance of this creek's water flow into the Napa Valley and our most significant asset, the vineyards! Dwayne also stated that scientist surmise that 4000 tons of gravel came down in one event, contributing to the floods of December 31st, 2005.  At approximately 1:40 p.m., President Bill Word had to interrupt and bring the presentation to conclusion. The information captured the entire room's attention, and left many of us wanting to see the balance of the slide show… Thank you Dwayne Leong, for the education.

Rotary Membership Moments

Week 42 – April 16 – 22, 2006   Passion is a word that is seldom used when it comes to membership but it fits. If someone in your club isn't passionate about Rotary there won't be a continue effort to seek out new members to continue the good work of Rotary. We all must be passionate enough to seek out new members.

Passion gets results

Week 43 – April 2 - 29, 2006    Rotary community service events are a wonderful place to teach your children and grandchildren what it's like to help out in their community. Why not include one of their friends? Their friends have parents who may take an interest in Rotary once they see first hand the value of being a member.

Share Rotary opportunities
