ROBERT LAMBORN
1923-2004
By Mark Terrell

Bob Lamborn was a distinguished Rotarian who was beloved by all. We will miss you!

When you met Bob, for the first time or every other time, he made you feel at home and an immediate friendship was kindled.

Bob Lamborn

Bob Lamborn

Bob was a man who has gifted all of us with his infectious spirit of life!

I asked many Rotarians to describe Bob in one or two words, next to impossible!!!

Mountain wiseman, jester, comic, lover, flirtatious, clever, intelligent, forgiving, passionate, mentor are just some of the words people used to describe him.

Bob would laugh thru his smile.

Bob exemplified what Rotary stands for as we consider the Four Way Test:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

At Bob's memorial service (held at the Catholic Church because it could seat the most people) a pamphlet was handed to the congregation. His philosophy for life grew out of every corner of his life with the following:

When you plant seeds in the lives of others,
and water them with Love and Care,
you will reap a Harvest of Sweet Memories,
that will follow you everywhere.

We love you Bob and thanks for your gifts.

Loss of a Rotarian
By Father Mac

Our meeting began with a moment of silence in remembrance of Bob Lamborn, a dear friend and a dedicated Rotarian. He will be missed.

Charlotte Williamson

Charlotte Williamson

President Toohey announced at our April 13th meeting the District Conference will be held in June.

Toni Heydlauff was on hand to announce the run/walk event to support research to find a cure for multiple myeloma. This annual event is always well supported by Rotarians and rightfully so, in addition to Charlotte Williamson, who is winning her fight against a form of this disease, it affects others in the Club as well.

Paul Krsek drew attention to an opportunity to support students in Oakland for which the hat was passed.

Jake Scheideman reported that another two house were paid for in the effort last week. Awesome!

The fitness committee announced a hike in Las Posadas for the 24th of April.

BELLRINGERS

  • Mark Terrell was on hand for Barry Bonds hitting his 660th homer.
  • Al Albright's daughter Tina got engaged
  • Elaine John's daughter furthers her career with her editorial skills.
  • Norm Mitroff rings the bell for having spent his first six months in St Helena!

FINES

Fines levied by President Toohey were stiff simply because many of those fined had not yet been fined and needed catching up.

CITY OF HOPE

Valerie Vigil and Heather Paslay, representing the City of Hope, were on hand to make their presentation on what the City of Hope does and to promote the upcoming

5K WALK/RUN
SATURDAY MAY 8, 9 AM
CRANE PARK

All of the funds raised support the research to find a cure for breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women—more than 40,000 women this year alone. More than 2 million women now have breast cancer.

City of Hope

From its inception in 1913 when garment workers began to fight against tuberculosis, the City of Hope has been on the cutting edge of the research for the treatment of cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. They have participated in the discovery of bone marrow transplants, the use of insulin, thousands of clinical trials, cancer drugs, prostate cancer surgery, and treatments for breast cancer.

The City of Hope attended our meeting to encourage all Rotarians to participate in the walk/run and to volunteer that Saturday to help make the event come off smoothly.

We were dismissed 15 minutes early! That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. -- MAC

Lamborn the Reporter
By Steve Yost

Bob Lamborn contributed many an article to the Nairator during his years as a Rotarian. When I first joined the club during Monica Marvin's presidency he and Jerry McQuiddy were trying to resurrect the newsletter as it had not been published in several years. We all worked together to get it going again. Bob was an excellent writer and had, for a time, written a column for the St. Helena Star. I only wish I could have his wit.

Jake and the District Governor
By Wendell Laidley

President Phil opened our April 6th meeting to a packed house and a long agenda. Visiting Rotarians included, Lucille Jordan from Nantucket, MA, Kat Su from Wailea, Maui, Norm Manzer from Calistoga, Caroline Fox (our webmaster) from Santa Rosa, Bob Beck from Calistoga and regular Kelly Crane from Concor. Guests included Jane Wright with husband Jim, Missy Doran with husband Tim, the always welcome Toni Heydlauff, Jake Scheideman's girlfriend Mary Sue Frank, Rick Healy, owner of Café 29, with Jonathan Briano, Leslie and David Moreland with Alan Fowler, James Forbes of Grace Episcopal Church with Norm Manzer, Brian Tench with Steve Yost, and Donn Black, guest of Craig Anderson introduced by Paul Krsek.

Our District Governor Norm Owen was with us to induct New Members and Paul Harris Fellows. Toni Heydlauff reminded us of the Multiple Myeloma Walk April 17 and that Don Heydlauff was not alone as a sufferer, with Steve Rivas' father struggling with it, Jonathan Briano's mother, and that Charlotte Williamson has a rare form of it. Toni and Don's son is cutting his first CD and has pledged all proceeds to the Multiple Myeloma Foundation.

Elaine John

Elaine John

Elaine John reminded members who have not yet paid their Rotary Foundation dues to do so quickly because the year is winding down and we want to retain our record of high participation. Rick Shurtz announced the start of bocce ball on May 17 and invited all to participate and Don Scully announced the first Fitness & Recreation hike up the Los Posados Hills leaving from Vintage Hall at 10 a.m. April 24.

Steve Yost reported the great success of the Show Rotary insert in Valley newspapers and credited Jerry McQuiddy (had to leave meeting early to attend to wife Inge in hospital) with much of the success for his persistence along with members who contributed articles.

District Governor Norm Owen then inducted new members Donn Black, Beverly Davies-Mes and Servaas Mes and David Moreland. Beverly thanked the Club for the honor of membership, Servaas recounted his journey from his Netherlands homeland to northern British Columbia as a physiotherapist then to St. Helena after meeting Beverly; David Moreland reported leaving his native Arizona for the Naval Academy, then marrying ten days after graduation and postings abroad before moving to San Jose for 27 years then being free to move to St. Helena by choice; and Donn Black told his story of "growing up" in Baker City, Oregon, attending Oregon State University in the metropolis of Corvallis, Oregon, then gracing the streets of Manhattan at NYU Law School as a cool city sophisticate from Corvallis. After charming NYC he deigned to move to Paris (not Oregon, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Arkansas or Ohio but France) where he tried court martials before moving to Oakland to practice law and politics as Mayor

of Lafayette and marrying Toni Allegra in 1996. All new members were fined the customary $50 unless they can deliver 50 business cards (not including duplicates) to President Phil soon.

President Phil then turned the floor over to District Governor Norm Owen who spoke of the foresight of Paul Harris in setting up the Rotary Foundation in 1917 and how so few would then have imagined the accomplishments of the Foundation since then in world-wide service. Among those accomplishments he cited the four new wells that can be drilled for $100 in Zimbabwe and the deep waters wells that can be drilled for $1000 in India for 100 people to have fresh water. Governor Norm then awarded Paul Harris Fellowships to Roslyn Martin (in absentia, but quickly "accepted on behalf" by Andy Bartlett), Missy Doran, Megan Cressick (accepted on behalf by Paul Krsek), Charlotte Williamson, Jim Wright and our next year's leader Kathleen Patterson. Governor Norm concluded by noting his satisfaction in watching the rapid growth and prosperity of our St. Helena Club and inviting all to celebrate the "last of the first hundred years" of Rotary.

JAKE AND NICARAGUA

Jake Scheideman then took the floor and reported on the hard work of home building going on in Nicaragua. He was presented with checks of $7060 for Rotary Housing from our club and Calistoga, represented by Norm Manzer, and $7489 from Grace Church represented by James Forbes.

Norm Manzer, Jake Scheideman and James Forbes

Jake then presented a slide show of his work in Nicaragua over the past five years from the first baseball team and backstop, through the baseball park that now houses 600 fans and has become a monument to Community pride, and now a housing project currently comprising ten houses that is destined to reach sixty for poorly housed Nicaraguan families. Last year he contracted with President Carter's Habitat for Humanity and they are assisting in Project Management. All funds come from private sources and go into materials while labor is provided by the ten volunteers who traveled to Nicaragua last year, including Jeff Epps, Tim Coon, Ron Scullati and Norm Manzer and the fortunate recipients of the houses, each of whom must participate in the construction of her own building. The typical house costs $4000 and Jake showed slides of the first buildings now almost completed. His target is to build fifty more in addition to the first ten over the next four years in five new sites.

The first site is already named St. Helenacita for "little St. Helena."

Jake then asked the four members who have been most active on site in Nicaragua to share their experiences, and Tim Coon began by telling us what the slides don't show, in how the money contributed keeps on working and growing as the progress reports circulate and encourage other donors to contribute. Tim's son has accompanied him to Nicaragua and seen how this project is such a great example of what President Phil calls "Leading by Example."

Jeff Epps then repeated what he has said before, that working in Nicaragua changed his life, and how he feels his life going full circle when his Rotary Club goes international with him as part of the action. Remarking how the need is so great, he felt proud to see the buildings materialize into family homes with water, electricity and tile floors. Jeff has personally sponsored a 21 year old woman with four children to return to an education cut off at sixth grade because the local school ended there. He concluded with an encouragement to all who want to effect change to go to Nicaragua, and experience what he has.

Ron Scullati said he was grateful to have been invited, after his son had gone the previous year to work on the baseball diamond. He found his greatest satisfaction in seeing the people participate in building their own homes that would not have been possible without the help from America, and he will certainly go back.

Norm Manzer wrapped up saying he first represented Rotary in 1992, and this month will embark on his 19th trip to Russia, and then plans to go to Nicaragua for a second time. He told how a 26 year old schizophrenic named Harold had not been out the walls of his house for 8 years and was literally chained inside the building. Seeing this, Jake found leather straps to replace the harsh steel chains and some medication from a doctor friend that completely changed the man's life. Then installing a steel pole in the yard enabled him to be tethered in the yard outside the building walls, and when it rained Harold did not want to come inside but just wanted to stay out in the rain. Imagine.

JAKE

District Governor Norm brought the house to a standing ovation by awarding his personal Pursue Rotary Dream pin to Jake for his outstanding achievements and on-going commitment.

(Scribe's note: As a former developer builder, your humble scribe knows some of the frustrations and hassles of property development in the first world, and can only imagine the magnified ones of a pioneer like Jake in the third world. Pioneers are the ones with the arrows in their backsides, and let's keep in mind that between the lofty reports of accomplishments we hear at meetings there is a lot of hard, sometimes frustrating, and even discouraging work in the face of obstacles we know to expect at home, and many new unexpected ones.)

Wendell Dinwiddie
By Jim Haslip

It was charming to watch Wendell Dinwiddie's sparkle as I began to ask him about his years in Rotary. His answers could be encapsulated a few minutes later as he sat at the piano to accompany our "Welcome Singers".

Wendell Dinwiddie

Wendell Dinwiddie

Wendell joined Rotary more than half a lifetime ago. As an orthopedic surgeon, he wanted to connect with his adopted community and form closer and more intimate relationships. He fondly recalls the use of song books in earlier years and the spontaneous humor and fellowship that endure.

I didn't realize that I had often passed his peach stand on the corner of Deer Park and Silverado. He grows a couple of acres of trees and has enjoyed this business and hobby for about 25 years. I also am looking forward to sampling the fresh tomatoes and melons.

I was fascinated to learn that Wendell attended the University of Virginia to complete his training as a surgeon. It was founded, as you know, by Thomas Jefferson and is nestled just below Monticello. He was drawn into the Navy and was the only orthopedic surgeon at the Quantanimo (sp?) Marine Base during the Vietnam War. Later he found himself in DaNang.

Wendell closed the doors of his office near St.Helena in 2000. He continues to work as a doctor part time in Hollister, 5-10 days a month, picking up the pieces of overly enthusiastic motorcycle riders. He loves to sail from a base in Fiji, something he has done about 10 times. He has also sailed most of the Caribbean and the north coast of South America.

We are all grateful for the quiet spirit Wendell brings to weekly fellowship. I appreciate his efforts to keep our eager "choir" on key!

District Assembly
By Steve Yost

Our Rotary club was well represented at the District Assembly held in Eureka April 16-17th.

Jim and Alexandra Haslip, John and Joan Sales, Elaine John, Kathleen Patterson, Bill Word, and Steve Yost shared a table at the kick off dinner held at the Scotia Inn Friday night. They did enjoy the evening—you might ask Jim how he met his wife.

The next day Tony Albright, Tim Coon, Roger Adams, and Bonnie Schoch joined the rest of the attendees. Tim and John made presentations to breakout sessions (Nicaragua and Rotoplast). Our president elect Kathleen was busy absorbing information that will help her lead the club in the coming year.

The material presented at the meeting was very informative and good spirit prevailed everywhere.

This will be my last issue as Editor of our newsletter. I have been asked to take on another club responsibility so it is timely to turn over these duties. Polly Keegan has graciously accepted the job and will start with our next issue. We are blessed to have a great staff which has made my job so much easier and I am sure they will support Polly just as well. If any members have a suggestion as to how to do things better or an idea of what they would like to see in the bulletin please contact her.
