May 17, 2005. Could there be a better meeting to show the involvement of Rotary in the local community? Vera Trinchero, Susan Smith, and Christy and David Abreu were named Paul Harris Fellows for their invaluable support of the Winter Ball. Their vision and indefatigable efforts have contributed to the raising of millions of dollars for local community projects, the most significant of which is the Boys and Girls Club. Bob Torres, President of the Board for the clubs, accepted a check of $100,000 to support their new building project on the elementary school campus. Jeff Epps also presented a second check of the same amount to support their annual operating expenses. Did you know that the St. Helena club assists 800 children and that the Calistoga site helps another 400? Frank Sottile showed computer generated images of the proposed new facility that illustrated the location of the various club activities. The Fine Masters were also honored as exemplary members, receiving $100 savings bonds from the Boys and Girls Club: Trent Martinelli, Nancy Hernandez, Elyse Quast, Taylor Smith, and Kane Elliot. Among our visitors was Alan Gordon, Superintendent of Schools, who is supporting the new building project. In addition to the parents and staff of the club, other guests were Paul Hook of Louisiana, Ima Holcomb, Terrance Ford, Liz Farmer, and Jason McKelly (our outbound student to Argentina).

Joel Toller announced a fund-raiser by the Education Foundation. It will be held at the new Press Restaurant, next to Dean and Delucca's, on the evening before their opening day. The Education Foundation is strongly supported by Rotary through Winter Ball proceeds. They provide grants to teachers to improve the quality of education and to stimulate innovation. Tickets are $200 and can be purchased by calling Susie Reedy at 963-8140.

Jim Haslip is seeking help collecting produce at the conclusion of each Friday's Farmers Market. The food goes to the local Food pantry for distribution to needy families. Jim also announced that the Rotary team of Brotemarkle, Andreae, Krsek, and Haslip won the Service Club trophy at the PUC golf tournament on behalf of our club.

May 10, 2005. It seems to be the season for little girls coming into the world-both Miles Metzger and Steven Rivas gave bell ringers at our May 10th meeting announcing their wives had given birth to daughters. Congratulations.

BEVERLY DAVIES-MES

Our finemaster Beverly Davies-Mes asked Tony Albright, David Moreland, and Linda Beard-Delucchi what would kill you first – lack of sleep or lack of food – answer is sleep in about 10 days. Next, she asked Steve Carbone, Bob Graham, and Alston Hayne what speed a sneeze comes out – 25/100/130 MPH? Answer is 100.

NUCLEAR TERRORISM

Our guest speaker was John Alioto. He is both a lawyer and spent quite a bit of time involved in the shipping industry. He has started a new company named Veritainer Corp., which is headquartered here in St. Helena. The mission of the company is to develop and install radiation detection devices on the 2,200 large cranes worldwide, which will allow for protection against terrorists loading hidden atomic bombs or nuclear materials on board container ships bound for the United States. The devices will detect any nuclear components that may be lodged in any of the 21.2 million containers being shipped.

John feels we could be in grave danger of a major attack if our enemies are successful in bringing into our country these materials. Research has been done by people in the shipping business and university personnel familiar with nuclear materials. The first installation will take place next month at the Port of Oakland. He figures if all goes well all cranes would be covered by 2010. Early emphasis will be given to those foreign ports considered most likely to be used by terrorists.

John can be reached at 963-0606 or by email at www.veritainer.com.
