SEVEN RECOGNIZED AS PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS AND BENEFACTORS!
By Polly Keegan

May 24, 2006. The mission of the Rotary Foundation is to support the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs, and most of this work is supported by Paul Harris Funds. At times, the Paul Harris recognition is given to non-Rotarians who are honored because of outstanding service and contribution to the St. Helena Rotary and community.

President Bill Word called up Jeff Epps and Rob Andreae to say a few words about two important honorees: Art Goulard and Maurice Helmer.

ROB ANDREAE, ART GOULARD, MAURICE HELMER, JEFF EPPS, AND PRESIDENT BILL WORD

ROB ANDREAE, ART GOULARD, MAURICE HELMER, JEFF EPPS,
AND PRESIDENT BILL WORD

Rob and Jeff spoke about the 18-month Centennial Project, and how gratifying it was to have so much community involvement. They related how the project was stalling a bit, and Dick Osborn of PUC rallied forth and offered the names of Maurice Helmer and Art Goulard. These two individuals in particular donated an immense amount of energy and time and hard work, and as Jeff said, they pushed the project ahead, they got it done! Jeff and Rob owe them so much, and today they were honored as Paul Harris Fellows! Maurice and Art received a standing ovation from the membership!

HENDRIK SMEDING, BOB HOFFMAN, PRESIDENT BILL WORD, AND RUDY PAPALE

President Bill then called up Bob Hoffman, Rudy Papale and Hendrik Smeding who each were awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship medallion, along with a certificate and pin. Elaine John noted that Hendrik's pin has two sapphires as this is his third Paul Harris Fellowship (one has gone to his wife, and this one is for his son). The monies in the Paul Harris fund are contributed to humanitarian projects around the world.

PRESIDENT BILL WORD, DENISE TOOHEY, AND STEVE CARBONE

PRESIDENT BILL WORD, DENISE TOOHEY, AND STEVE CARBONE

By making a gift through your will, a bequest directed to the Rotary Foundation's Permanent Fund, you continue to support Rotary's future. Gifts of $10,000 or more qualify Rotarians for membership in the Bequest Society. Steve Carbone and Denise Toohey (representing Phil as well) were called up to be recognized for their bequests. They received all sorts of recognition – certificates, insignias, diamond pins and a crystal recognition piece, and a good round of applause.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Our exchange student from Germany, Swantje Paragenius, (after prodding from President Bill) told us that she was the elected prom queen this past weekend! Wow, what an honor!

Craig Ebersole, who plays the cello in the Napa Valley Youth Orchestra, wanted us to know that the orchestra is lacking some funding for this fiscal year. The budget is $22,000; they have $18,000 on hand and therefore are lacking $4,000. He asked for contributions. The group has 40 young people, they give three concerts a year, and the next is on June 3, 8:00 p.m. at Jefferson High School in Napa. Craig is the son of Steve Ebersole.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE NOTES:

President Bill said that the propositions on the ballot at the District Conference were passed, with the exception of two. Please see Bill if you're interested in knowing details of these results.

JAKE SCHEIDEMAN

JAKE SCHEIDEMAN

At the District Conference, St. Helena Rotary was recognized for Community Service and for International work. We received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Community Service that included all our activity such as the Centennial Project and the Winter Ball. District Governor Kelly noted that we raise a lot of money and we turn around and give it right back to the community. District Governor Kelly also honored "Hall of Famers", and these included our own Jake Scheideman.

PROGRAM:

THE BASICS OF SLEEP MEDICINE
Hossein Razavi, MD, FCCP, Medical Director
St. Helena Hospital Sleep Laboratory

Hossein Razavi, MD, FCCP, Medical Director

DR. HOSSEIN RAZAVI

Dr. Razavi was introduced by Elaine John. He practices in the Professional Building at St.Helena Hospital, and he treats both children and adults.

Dr. Razavi states that a third of all Americans are sleep deprived, and the disorder has an annual cost of $15.9 billion. Adults need at least 7 – 9 hours of sleep per night.

Obesity is contributing to sleeplessness, as is old age.

Snoring and sleep apnea impact the quality of sleep. Solutions are available, for example solutions to the problem of sleep apnea are in three categories: dental devices, surgery, or interfaces such as CPAP that gives positive airway pressure.

Paul Harris ... Continued

After being awake 18 hours during the day, one's alertness level is the same as being legally intoxicated. Sleep deprivation (from snoring, apnea, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, etc.) causes the same type of sluggishness, best illustrated by the incidence of auto crashes – a huge number!

Insomnia is usually a problem for older, depressed women. 30 million people suffer annually. Insomnia is a symptom, and therefore Dr. Razavi asks always that the person keep a two-week diary of how she is sleeping before he tries to diagnose and treat. He believes that insomnia treatments usually be non-pharmaceutical. Insomnia is more common in the elderly primarily because they tend to have more aches and pains, and acquired diseases. Also contributing are fear of death, bad experiences and (he hated to say it) retirement.

Restless leg syndrome needs to be individually evaluated.

Napping can be quite beneficial, yielding sharper vision and focus. Nap close to midday, about 15-30 minutes but not more than 45 minutes.

Tips to promote good, healthy sleep:

  • Avoid caffeine.
  • Avoid alcohol – at least you should not have it in your bloodstream when you go to bed. It takes about an hour to metabolize.
  • Exercise, but not to close to bedtime.
  • Avoid long or late naps.
  • Keep a regular bedtime schedule.
  • Do something relaxing when going to bed.
  • Remember that the bedroom is only for sleep and sex. If you lie awake a long time, get up and do something in another room. If you must have a TV in your bedroom, be sure to watch only non-agitating types of programming, and have another dim light on so that you are not intensely focused on the TV screen.

Rotary Membership Moments

Week 48 – May 28 – June 3, 2006   One of the nicest things that can happen in business is when you can be referred to a prospective client because you're known as a good Rotarian.  What a nice way to do business.  Become an involved member and you will grow as a person and your business will prosper as well.

Know your club members
and let them get to know you

Week 49 – June 4 – 10, 2006   Do you realize that Paul Harris our founder was the only Rotarian that was not invited to be a Rotarian?  Every Rotarian has been invited to be a part of this organization.

Invite someone to join Rotary
and give them a wonderful opportunity.

Week 50 – June 11 – 17, 2006   As the Rotary year draws to a close thank your President and Board for a job well done. Just because they are leaders doesn't mean that they don't like to be recognized for all the time and effort put in during the past year.

When Rotarians know they are appreciated they stay Rotarians.  This is true for leaders also.

Just say thanks

FINEMASTER:

BEVERLY DAVIES-MES

BEVERLY DAVIES-MES

Beverly Davies-Mes took her medical knowledge and used it to levy fines upon the masses.  She started out by asking Jim Haslip, Tony Albright, Doug Thompson and Servaas Mes (winners of the Valley Men Who Cook contest) what "an onion a day" would keep away.  When they got the correct answer "stomach cancer," they were still fined $5.00 apiece. She next asked Rob Andreae, Dave Moreland and Jim Smith "At what age do many people lose the enzymes to digest milk? When the answer of 2 was suggested, she levied $15.00 fines against all for not knowing that 12 was the correct answer (who didn't know that?). The last group was luckier: the group of Diane Bylund, Suzan Rada and Stephanie Johnson were correct when they guessed that Vitamin B1 helps in alleviating the symptoms of sea and air sickness – each was fined $5.00.

PROGRAM:

Al Albright was pleased to recognize the many students among us who had qualified for various scholarships. Rotarians and St. Helena High School staff had assisted in evaluating essays and conducting interviews to make sure that the best candidates were chosen. In the end, six St. Helena High School students were selected: Ramon Salgado, Lucas McMullen, Eddie McMullen, Savannah Weller, Dominique Olea and Ann Mitchell. These young adults have been recognized for their achievements and were on hand to meet with Rotary members and to answer questions.

St. Helena High School

St. Helena's Rotary Club is pleased to continue in its mission to help the youth of this city by continuing to work with the schools in many various capacities. Almost 1/3 of the room stood as Al asked members to stand up who had worked with the schools (many with Junior Achievement and through the scholarship process).

St. Helena High School

The three main scholarships were sponsored by Elwood Mee who set up a scholarship for agricultural studies. The essay for his scholarship was "How can we alleviate our dependency on foreign oil?" Dr. Bailey also sponsored a scholarship in honor of his accomplished son, who tragically passed away in 1985 in a flood. His legacy will mean greater opportunities to the winner of the scholarship. Rotary itself will be honoring a student with a scholarship of its own. The field was narrowed down for that scholarship after essays addressing "How Rotary can promote world peace" were evaluated and extensive interviews were conducted. The winners for these scholarships will be announced on Thursday, June 1, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. in the quad at St. Helena High School. Good luck to all the worthy finalists!

Legislative Proposals:

Through its four representatives at the District 5130 Conference this weekend, St. Helena Rotary will have its voice heard on the nine legislative proposals that have been put forth for consideration. St. Helena Rotary will be backing legislation designed to incorporate more women in leadership positions in Rotary, a measure which would have clubs treat Foundation Alumni the same as guests at meetings, a proposal to allow Foundation Alumni to join clubs by waiving the classification rules for them, a bill to force the District Governor to schedule the Assembly early and to refrain from scheduling any other events during that period, and a proposal to change the designation "Club Coordinator" to "Assistant Governor", and finally, two measures that will increase Rotary Assessments Dues.

Preferring to allow our representatives to make a decision on more complex issues, the club agreed to give proxies to our representatives to vote on proposals 6 and 7, which dealt with District Governor spending power and separate accounts for district committees.
