Boys and Girls Club Serves As Host By Jim Haslip
|
|
A buzz of fresh excitement filled the hall from the children, parents, and staff of the Boys and Girls Club. They
served a Mexican lunch and then opened the program as "fine masters". We learned that there are actually two clubs. Calistoga serves an average of 70 youngsters daily and St. Helena welcomes 170 children.
There are 4 core areas of activity: leadership, character, the arts, and sports/fitness. Rotary funds support the "Helping Hands" (homework), computer lab, and art programs. President Sean Maher
asserted, "…Rotary is the financial backbone of the Boys and Girls Club…" Awards were given to children who exemplified the Rotary qualities of "goodwill", "respectfulness", "honesty", and "trustworthiness". A special award reflected the qualities and efforts of
Don Heydlauff. Our special guest, Toni Heydlauff, was here to witness the presentation. The building program was described
with visual images of proposed building plans to be erected on the elementary school campus. They blend into the existing architecture and provide multiple uses for the school district. The project must go
through the California Environmental Quality Review process but it has received extensive input from neighbors already.
GUESTS AND VISITORS
introduced a student from PUC, Jared Hinkley, who is graduating with a Business/Accounting major. He
hopes to work in the area and eventually become a CPA.
Norman Alumbaugh
is nearing membership. He is a vintner with the Eagle & Rose Estate in Pope Valley. He runs a chain of motels called the Eagle & Rose Inns. He is designing and building a 10 passenger business jet.
Laura Miller, Wells Fargo Bank, was another guest.
ANNOUNCEMENTS District Conference begins June 17. President Phil urged everyone to attend the dinner on June 19th. The cost is $75 for the "black tie"
formal. Kathleen Patterson will be back from Osaka, Japan for the International Conference. Jake Scheideman, John Sales, and Phil Toohey
are on the program to describe our international projects in Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Nepal. We can register online at www.rotary5130.org.Phil's last board meeting is at Pinot Blanc on June 10. If
you plan to attend, let him know. |
