DILLON DOES IT AGAIN
By Steve Yost

Diane Dillon

Diane Dillon

Diane Dillon was our star performer at the PUC Golf Tournament held at the Napa Valley Country Club on a windy but sunny May 17th. A number of Rotarians participated in this annual event but none did as well as Diane. Her net 63 took first prize in the women's division, her gross 94 tied for first, and she had the longest drive of the day for the ladies.

A side note to the longest drive was Jim Haslip out drove the marker where upon Alan Fowler, Steve Carbone, and Steve Yost -- all playing with Jim -- congratulated him. Then, they got up to the marker and found it was not for the men -- too bad Jim!

Tim Doran led a makeshift group including Past DG Franz Wartenweiler, his friend Jim Cox, and a no show to the service club victory -- he brought a big trophy to present to the club. Others playing in this tournament were Jeff Epps, Dave Brotemarkle, Miles Metzger, and Mark Terrell.

In addition to golf, there was a buffet lunch before the tee off and dinner followed after. The meals were served in the brand new clubhouse.

By Donn Black

Phil Toohey, Club President 2003-2004

Phil Toohey

Right at 12:15 on the 26th, on yet another sparkling May day in St. Helena, President Phil rang the meeting to order.

Craig Anderson asked for a moment of silence in honor of our troops in Iraq as Memorial Day is this coming Monday.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Andy Bartlett read a short and touching letter from Brazil from one of the Club's exchange students.
  • Pres Phil reminded all of the District Conference on June 17 and urged early sign ups.

"ESSAYS FOR SCHOLARSHIP" PROGRAM

Essay Finalists

Essay Finalists

Dr. Charles "Chuck" Bailey is now in his eighth (at least) year of masterminding and directing St. Helena Rotary's Essays for Scholarships competition. The competitors are high school Saints on the way to universities who were asked to elucidate on the following questions to compete for the indicated (very worthwhile) scholarships:

  1. "How can we bring democracy to Iraq and use the process to affect the rest of the Middle East?"
    (Rotary Scholarship)

    Claire Daniels
    Erin Eakle
    Gaetano Bettinille

  2. "Is organic farming a benefit or bane to viticulture?"
    (Elwood Mee Scholarship)

    Claire Daniels
    Ashley McMullen
    Kylor Williams

Wonderfully perceptive presentations by six remarkable young persons. The winners will be announced at Rotary June 1st.

CORRECTION

Chuck Meibeyer's mother recently passed on, and Chuck thanked the membership for its sympathy, and pledged the balance of his Paul Harris account and a matching amount to Jake's project in honor of his mother. The Nairator had incorrectly named Jim Meehan instead of Chuck. We apologize.

Boys and Girls Club Serves As Host
By Jim Haslip

A buzz of fresh excitement filled the hall from the children, parents, and staff of the Boys and Girls Club. They served a Mexican lunch and then opened the program as "fine masters". We learned that there are actually two clubs. Calistoga serves an average of 70 youngsters daily and St. Helena welcomes 170 children. There are 4 core areas of activity: leadership, character, the arts, and sports/fitness. Rotary funds support the "Helping Hands" (homework), computer lab, and art programs. President Sean Maher asserted, "…Rotary is the financial backbone of the Boys and Girls Club…" Awards were given to children who exemplified the Rotary qualities of "goodwill", "respectfulness", "honesty", and "trustworthiness". A special award reflected the qualities and efforts of Don Heydlauff. Our special guest, Toni Heydlauff, was here to witness the presentation.

The building program was described with visual images of proposed building plans to be erected on the elementary school campus. They blend into the existing architecture and provide multiple uses for the school district. The project must go through the California Environmental Quality Review process but it has received extensive input from neighbors already.

GUESTS AND VISITORS

  • Linda Beard-Delucchi introduced a student from PUC, Jared Hinkley, who is graduating with a Business/Accounting major. He hopes to work in the area and eventually become a CPA.
  • Norman Alumbaugh is nearing membership. He is a vintner with the Eagle & Rose Estate in Pope Valley. He runs a chain of motels called the Eagle & Rose Inns. He is designing and building a 10 passenger business jet.
  • Laura Miller, Wells Fargo Bank, was another guest.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

District Conference begins June 17. President Phil urged everyone to attend the dinner on June 19th. The cost is $75 for the "black tie" formal. Kathleen Patterson will be back from Osaka, Japan for the International Conference. Jake Scheideman, John Sales, and Phil Toohey are on the program to describe our international projects in Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Nepal. We can register online at www.rotary5130.org.

Phil's last board meeting is at Pinot Blanc on June 10. If you plan to attend, let him know.

WINTER BALL DONATIONS TO LOCAL BENEFICIARIES

Jeff Epps, Rotary Foundation president, reported that a gross amount of $400,000 was collected at the Winter Ball, netting over $300,000:

  • He presented a check for $200,000 to Frank Sottile on behalf of the Boys and Girls Club with half of it earmarked for their building project.
  • Mark Obershulte, on behalf of the Public Schools Foundation, accepted our gift of $25,000. They fund scores of grants totaling $100,000 for projects by teachers. One example is a weather station at the Primary School that feeds data into the district server that is available to all the teachers in the district.
  • David Brotemarkle helped generate $13,000 for Junior Achievement.
  • $28,000 went to the vocal music program headed by Craig Bond.
  • $13,000 is set aside for the Vintage Hall beautification project.
