KATHLEEN PATTERSON RETURNS FROM OSAKA
By Father Mac

Phil Toohey, Club President 2003-2004

Phil Toohey
Club President 2003-2004

Another magnificent day in Paradise as the Club came together for President Phil's second to last meeting. The boy clearly has one foot on a banana peel, and the other on the end of an outstanding year as our President. Don't miss his debunking on June 29th!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

A bit of a cloud hung over the Club as mention was made of the tragic loss of Carol Thomas, Mike and Ann's daughter of only thirty years. Keep the Thomas family in your prayers. No plans for response have yet been made, but this information will be forthcoming.

The District Conference will be held on June 17th. Of all the events surrounding that gathering, Phil asked that as many as possible attend the closing dinner at which our Club will be the recipient of many awards.

Kathleen Patterson

Kathleen Patterson
Club President 2004-2005

Our soon-to-be-President (in only two weeks!) Kathleen Patterson gave an inspiring report of her experience in Osaka, Japan, where she attended a five-day gathering of Rotarians from all over the world for Rotary International. Especially meaningful for her was an Interfaith Religious Service on Sunday morning, led by Clerics representing Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism. The theme central to each of these faith-based families is: COMPASSION. The imperative is clear; to care for those less fortunate and to reach out wherever there is need and address it. And this is exactly what Rotary is doing. Beyond politics or bureaucracy, Rotary is digging in to change the world. Be sure not to miss the 100th gathering of Rotary International in Chicago. Over 100,000 will attend and it will be an awesome experience. Make reservations now!

Phil reported on having presented the three Rotary Scholarships to the graduates of St. Helena High. The Elwood Mee, Kevin Bailey and General scholarships were awarded among some 75 others to the students. It was an extravagant example of how supportive this community is of our students.

Don Scully

Don Scully

Don Scully reported on the Fitness and Recreation schedule for upcoming events. Everyone was given a handout with names and phone numbers of the leaders and times and places. Lots of interest in getting out and taking a few deep breathes.

Suzan Rada expressed her gratitude for all those who purchased Granola for Project Amigo. Two checks of $900 were raised. Enjoy your breakfast cereal!

FINE MASTER – CAROL COLLISON

Bellringers:

  • Jim Wright and Miles Metzger both gave $100 toward their Paul Harris fund for having successfully married off their sons.

  • Steve Ebersole gave $25 for the adventure his kids went on getting information on the local police force. The kids won a lunch at Taylor's.

  • Alston Hayne offered a bell ringer for having dated the astrologer that Nancy and Ronald Regan had consulted!

Carol's theme was new membership and right off fined Bill Word $20 for the twenty new members in the club. In an effort to further introduce new members, Carol cleverly fined away and built relationships at the same time!

ELIOT HURWITZ
Program Manager for the Napa County
League of Governments

Eliot Hurwitz, Program Manager for the Napa County League of Governments

Eliot Hurwitz

Coming from a distinguished background in work on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Eliot Hurwitz now lives in Novato and brings his significant gifts to bear on Bay Area Environmental issues. His program was fascinating. Asking the deeper questions about what makes communities livable, the key concept he introduced and expounded upon was SUSTAINABILITY. What does it mean to make a commitment to a place where you plan to live for the long term and have generations follow? Sustainability involves the three big E's: Environment, Economy, and Social Equity. All three are interwoven and interdependent, and I suppose if there were one thing I took from this program is this notion of interconnectedness. The environment, the economy, social patterns, transportation, everything that makes for life, is all one kind of community "soup" (my word, not Eliot's).

The core of the program focused on what is happening with planning right here in the Napa Valley which is, of course, just one micro community in the greater Bay Area. There are advantages in that we are largely agricultural, but also, from American Canyon to Calistoga, willing to talk with each other and plan together, which is the core of Eliot's work. In his handout, he offers the guiding principles that have surfaced for the Napa County League of Governments. In a nutshell, and without explanation, they are:

A. Agricultural Preservation  B. Collaborative Planning C. Economic Development D. Vital Town Centers E. Environmental Sustainability, Conservation and Enhancement F. Quality Housing G. Coordinated Visitor-Serving Uses H. Mobility and Access I. Social, Cultural and Economic Diversity J. Quality Education and K. Quality Social Services.

CRAIG UNDERHILL AND JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT

Craig Underhill

Craig Underhill

JA was founded 90 years ago to teach the Free Enterprise System to students. It has evolved into a K-12 program. Each year, each grade receives 5 hours of teaching from volunteers in the community. The teaching segment is different for each grade, and builds upon the previous year's study. The schools are very willing to devote this segment of time, and the teachers handle complimentary study efforts, with the goal of educating students to be financially literate. For example, the 6th grader are learning "how to do business with another country", including imports vs exports, currency exchange rates, marketing and eventually writing a business plan.

The study guides are well thought out and structured, and JA needs VOLUNTEERS!
