KATHLEEN PATTERSON
NEW YEAR – NEW VISION - NEW AGENDA
By Jim Meehan

Incoming president Kathleen Patterson opened the meeting; and Diane Bylund read the day's invocation. Introduction of visitors and guests was followed by the induction of two new members by Alston Hayne. Both new members have recently relocated to the valley: Carol Sobczak is an attorney with Coombs & Dunlap, and Dr. Debbie Victoria-Seale is a practicing chiropractor. Welcome new members!

Kathleen Patterson announced that the topic and reasons of increasing dues was discussed at a recent board meeting. After a general discussion, a verbal vote was submitted to the club to make a $5.00 increased to monthly dues; and was passed unanimously.

KATHLEEN'S VISION AS PRESIDENT

Kathleen Patterson, St. Helena Rotary Club President, 2004-2005

KATHLEEN PATTERSON
Club President 2004-2005

"It is a great privilege to serve as your President in this Centennial Year. I have learned so much about Rotary in my year as President-elect. Throughout the year I attended the Pre Pets (President elect Training) meeting, the PETS training weekend, the District Assembly, the International Convention in Osaka, Japan, and most recently our own District 5130 Conference. These meetings were filled with information and inspiration and I feel that I began the year as a member of the St. Helena Rotary Club and finished the year a Rotarian, a member of a worldwide group of individuals trying to make the world a better place. This is an awesome organization to which we belong. I've always been proud of our club and all that we do for the youth in our community and how we support Jake's Nicaraguan project and Phil's wheelchair project, Rotoplast and many, many others, but I had only a little knowledge of Rotary International, and of the good works of the Rotary Foundation.

Kathleen Pastterson  . . . Continued

I'm an optimist; I thrive on hope and am a sucker for the efforts and results of human caring and kindness. However, these are just ideals and don't do much good unless put into action. I'm also an action oriented person and Rotary is the perfect vehicle in which to put these ideals to work. Arch Klumph, the idea man behind the Rotary Foundation, said it so succinctly, "Money alone does little good. Individual service is helpless without money. The two together can be a Godsend to civilization". Over this past year, I have met Rotarians from around the world and have learned about projects that have changed peoples' lives. Amazingly this has been going on for 100 years! I can't even imagine the number of lives that have been changed by the work of Rotarians throughout the world during this time.

My goal this year is the same as the goal of our Rotary International President Glenn Estess Jr. i.e., to celebrate 100 years of service and in doing so bring these stories of service and the accomplishments of other Rotarians around the world alive to you. At the end of the year I hope we will all have a better understanding just how great this organizations we belong to is and realize its potential for hope in our world in the next 100 years."

New High Tech High School Foundation

NEW TECH HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATION

This very innovative approach to learning is geared toward preparing students to excel in the 21st century, using all available technology to enhance problem-solving study and results. Their focus is project based learning, accredited college courses, digital portfolio and workplace internships. There are several schools now in Northern California, but the Napa based school is one of the first, one of the examples being analyzed for the concept expansion across the United States.

New Tech School is geared to those students who have a particular leaning and aptitude for technology application in the workplace. The students are given large-scope projects to tackle as a team. Most high school subject matter is experienced and learned in relation to the project. Teamwork and group collaboration are essential. Most importantly, the students are all interested, having chosen this type of educational experience, and they have great fun learning.

Grace Episcopal Church Hosts June 15th Rotary Meeting
By Kathy Zelazny

What a great way to escape the sweltering heat and bring the Club together again by meeting in the newly constructed building at Grace Episcopal Church. While the venue was a temporary relocation for the weekly meeting (due to the remodel of the kitchen at Native Sons' Hall) many members wondered if the Church's beautiful new digs could be the site for some future Club meetings. Everyone was extremely appreciative to Father Mac and the Church for providing the Club with such a luxurious (and cool) room at the last minute!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Phil Toohey, Club President 2003-2004

PHIL TOOHEY
Club President 2003-2004

Phil Toohey opened the meeting by extending the Club's thanks to Father Mac, Helen Christianson and Grace Episcopal Church for the use of the new building, which Father Mac noted was a gift from the community.

Mike Thomas made a very touching statement to the Club in which he described his daughter Carrie and her long battle with chronic pain syndrome. Carrie passed away on June 6, 2004 at the very young age of 30. Mike extended his thanks to the Club and the community for all of the support that he and his family has received during this very difficult time. There will be an informal gathering at the Thomas home, 2170 Palmer Drive in St. Helena, on Saturday, June 19th, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. to remember Carrie. The Thomas family is requesting that no flowers be sent, please.

Only one more meeting until President Phil steps down: The debunking takes place on June 29th at Grace Episcopal Church (we will be dark that day). The festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m. Don't miss this opportunity to get your two cents in on Phil's presidency as we send Phil off with style.

Don Scully reminded everyone that there will be a hike up the History Trail in Bothe Park on Saturday, June 19th at 10:00 a.m. The hike will end at the ancient cemetery by the California Department of Forestry.

Rex Stults announced that the St. Helena Chamber of Commerce will hold a "Coffee with the City" meeting at 7:45 a.m. on Friday, June 18th. The topic will be issues facing local business owners owning commercial real estate.

President Phil presented commemorative plaques to Kathleen Patterson, Tony Albright and Elaine John in thanks for their outstanding service to the Club. Many thanks to these three individuals for their tireless commitment to the Club.

FINE MASTER -- PHIL TOOHEY

Bell Ringers:

  • Bob gave $30 for recently visiting the Club's first exchange student, Tanya Gable, in Australia. Tanya is now 30, works for the Salvation Army, and is expecting a child.
  • Loren Gardner gave $100 toward his Paul Harris for his wedding, which will take place next week in Fresno.

  • Bert Johansson gave $25 to celebrate the engagement of his youngest daughter, who will be getting married some time next year. His oldest daughter will be getting married in November as well.
  • Steve Carbone gave $25 for missing meetings due to travel.
  • Phil Toohey fined Don Black $25 to allow Don to report on what he will be up to this summer.
  • Several other members who were not present were fined, including Gary Delucchi because, as Phil explained, his wife Linda is "so beautiful and he's not here."

RAFFLE

Since the attendees learned that there was a nice bottle of Lamborn Vineyards wine up for grabs in the raffle, they all wanted to purchase more raffle tickets before pulling the lucky numbers. Norm Alumbaugh ended up walking away with the prize, while the Club raked in $72 from the weekly raffle.

BARBARA HUDSON
Employer Relations Specialist for St. Helena Hospital

Graduating from Sonoma State with a degree in economics, Barbara Hudson brought her expertise in financial matters to Napa County to provide consultation and education services to employers regarding workforce health risks, and the costs associated therewith. Barbara runs the "Work Well Program" for St. Helena Hospital, a program that has been in place since 2001. The program works with employers in Napa County to assist them with minimizing employee health care costs. On average, an employer can expect an increase of up to 15% or more in health care costs every year. Napa County has experienced an average annual increase of approximately 26%, and some Napa County employers have stated that the increase has actually been about 35%. Because of this increase and the limited choices that employers have in this area, St. Helena Hospital started focusing on prevention and developed the "Work Well Program."

The program has a three tiered approach: (i) onsite educational materials are provided to the employees regarding health care and preventative steps to limit health risks; (ii) the program builds an information-based health partnership with the employer and its employees by collecting health related data regarding each employee and building a work force profile; and (iii) the program defines the financial impact of work force health. The program compiles a group health profile showing the risks regarding serious health issues and provides employees with personalized health reports containing suggestions for improving their health. The program also deals with managing health risks over time by developing a plan of action, implementing wellness activities for employees, and monitoring improvements.

The program provides many benefits to employers, including a healthier workforce, increase in productivity, decrease in absenteeism, increase in employer satisfaction and a decrease in healthcare expenditures.
