SABOTAGE AT THE PODIUM
By Donn Black

KATHLEEN PATTERSON - Club President 2004-2005

KATHLEEN PATTERSON
Club President 2004-2005

July 20, 2004 – Following the flag salute and Steve Yost's stirring invocation, President Patterson struggled in vain to call some 43 hot, noisy Rotarians to order—into a dead microphone. As chaos threatened, immediate past pres Phil Toohey ("I didn't need a mike") and set-up veteran Mike Thompson (I'm a mike expert) literally jumped into the breach. Rushing to the equipment locker, the two quickly discovered that various leads had been, or had been left, disconnected, presumably by local anarchists intent upon preventing Rotary from doing any more good works.

Proving to be completely unflappable, President Patterson calmly awaited audio restoration, whereupon she forcefully brought the meeting to order, only to discover there were no—zip—visiting Rotarians present. Hastily, she turned to guests, discovering there were six to be duly introduced and greeted musically by the Seven Rotarians Glee Club of the week (. . . come again, come again, come again!).

Then, beaming, the President announced three birthdays on July 21—Don Scully, Dave McLaren and—her own! Ron and Rhoda Clark and Kathy and Gary Zelazny were honored for anniversaries (more singing by the Seven Rotarians). Then, two new members, Carol Sobczak and Debbie Victoria-Seale were asked to recall childhood memories by way of getting us all better acquainted. Great stories, presumably true.

SABOTAGE AT THE PODIUM  . . . Continued

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Announcements abounded as the meeting gained momentum.

GARY JAFFE

Gary Jaffe signaled an upcoming Club golf outing at Mare Island Golf Course on Wednesday, August 11, with tee-off at 1:00. Dinner after at 6:30 at Bistro Don Giovanni. Count on about $70 for the entire day.

GARY JAFFE

DON SCULLY

Don Scully of the Recreation Committee explained that signup sheets were about to be passed around to enable reasonably fit members to express interest in, but not commitment to, joining future Rotary excursions in tennis, bike riding, walking, and hiking.

DON SCULLY

STEVE YOST

Similarly, Steve Yost, Director in charge of Club Service, explained he was passing around signup sheets to enable members to commit to help out with various club service projects. His presentation was tight and short.

STEVE YOST

ANDY BARTLETT

Andy Bartlett reported on the activities of the Club's exchange students, inbound and outbound, and read a letter from our exchange student who is matriculating in Belgium.

ANDY BARTLETT

REX STULTS

Rex Stults announced several upcoming Chamber of Commerce programs of import. Call Rex for subject, times and places.

REX STULTS

DIANE BYLUND

DIANE BYLUND

Diane Bylund implored one and all to bring in their two gifts for the raffle by the end of July so that she won't have to go shopping on their account.

RAFFLE

The winning raffle tickets all had for their first three numbers 835. The winners were: Steve Rivas, Carol Sobczak and Alston Hayne.

FINE MASTER

CHARLES BELL

CHARLES BELL

Professor Charles Bell, who claims to be the most terrifying Finemaster in recent club history, asked several hapless members (like President Patterson, Past Pres Phil Toohey, Steve Rivas and Rich Shurtz) impossible questions like how many gallons of gasoline would have the same energy as a roomful of hydrogen at standard atmospheric pressure (the kind at Rotary). Almost everyone got it wrong, but got off easy with fines in the neighborhood of $20.

PROGRAM

BETH NOVAK MILLIKEN
Napa Valley Vintners Association

Finally, Programs chair, Rex Stults, introduced Beth Novak Milliken, speaker of the day, speaking almost as fast as she does. Mrs. Milliken has enjoyed extensive background and experience in the wine industry, including the Presidency of the Napa Valley Vintners Association. Of late she has become interested in vitalizing the St. Helena Viticulture Club, first founded in 1876, to breathe new life into the St. Helena wine Appellation. That Appellation was established in 1985 largely to stave off the aggressive Rutherford Appellation, but has been largely dormant since. There are at least 90 growers and wineries in the geographic area of the St. Helena Appellation. All interested and qualified for membership parties are invited to join the group.

There being no further fines or business, the President gaveled the meeting into history.

LEARNING ABOUT THE ROTARY COMMITTEES
By Father Mac

July 13, 2004 –  Several Visiting Rotarians were on hand for our gathering, notably Jack and Maureen Walsh all the way from Melrose, MA and Dale Knight, President of the Rohnert Park-Cotati Club. One special guest was Juli, Loren Gardener's bride of two weeks.

Phil Toohey, Club President 2003-2004

PHIL TOOHEY
Club President 2003-2004

President Patterson announced the availability of the Celebrate Rotary pins, which will help bring to mind the international celebration of Rotary's one-hundredth year. She presented Phil Toohey with a Past President Plaque. She also welcomed our two newest members, Carol Sobczak, estate attorney and Debbie Victoria-Seale, Chiropractor. Carol admitted to having no time for hobbies other than nurturing her garden, and Debbie's plate is full with a three year old!

RAFFLE

Mike Thomas, Alan Fowler and Mark Terrell were raffle winners.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ROB ANDREAE

ROB ANDREAE

Rob Andreae gave an update on the Centennial project going on over at the High School with the Heydlauff Gardens. They are now looking for contractors, etc. that can help actually do the work of putting the gardens in.

Suzan Rada announced the upcoming fitness bicycle ride on July 25. The group will depart at noon and ride for about an hour and a half.

Martha and Marny from CRUSH announced that the initial fee to join Crush would be half price to Rotarians.

Final announcement by Mark Terrell for the golf outing to support the Napa Valley Museum. On August 30, beginning at 11:00.
