The Washington National Cathedral
by Randy Mahathy

At our Rotary meeting on July 16th, Rob Andreae introduced our speaker and fellow Rotarian, Alston Hayne.

Alston Hayne

Alston Hayne

The subject of Alston's presentation was the Washington National Cathedral. He has been representing the Cathedral in Northern California with his wife, Lisa, since 1994. Alston articulated the importance of the Cathedral not only as a "Timeless memorial to the Glory of God", but also as a place for all Americans to celebrate our victories and grieve our losses.

Construction on the Washington National Cathedral began in 1907 and it was completed in 1990. Over 500,000 people visit yearly and over 2,000 services are held. All denominations are welcomed!

Alston described that the Cathedral has some of the best stained glass, as well as stone carvings found in the world. Cushions for the seating were handmade by women throughout Britain.

A video, "The Setting of the Last Stone", was shown as part of the presentation. It highlighted the history of the building, the amazing facts of its structure, and the important part it plays not only in national pride and symbolism but also in real outreach programs that help people in the Washington D.C. area and the entire country.

As an example of the diversity and common ground practiced, the Cathedral plays host to a number of activities that give the public a reason to participate and often stay around for a while on the grounds. One of these is the Interfaith Concert. Groups from many different faiths join together to share a joyous event of music.

Surprisingly, the Washington National Cathedral receives no government funding. It carries out its mission through the help of volunteers and private contributions of support. Cathedral volunteers spend their time building homes, distributing food, and educating the communities, as well as in many other valuable ways.

If you would like to become a member of the National Cathedral Association and be a part of this national treasure, see Alston for details or write to:

Rotary Meeting Notes -- July 16, 2002
by Randy Mahathy

Jeff Epps, Club President 2002-2003

Jeff Epps
Club President 2002-2003

President Jeff Epps opened the meeting. Mark Terrell provided the invocation. He discussed how we are strengthened by our diversity. Here in the United States we enjoy many types of diversity. Rotary is also a very diverse organization and is in every corner of the world. As Mark so clearly stated, "The more we embrace diversity, the stronger we become."

Visitors for the Week:

  • Jeff Epps welcomed Mike Walkner.
  • Nick Bermudez introduced his guest, Ray Riosie, who was visiting for the third time.
  • Rex Stults introduced his guest, Melanie McGrath.

Announcements:

  • Frank Toller announced the date for the 2003 Winter Ball -- February 22, 2003. The guest list is now being amended. Folks were asked to fill out cards for folks they would like to see get invitations, or send them on to Frank or Joel Toller.
  • Mike Thomas asked everyone to check the roster and update as necessary for the web site.
  • Joice Beatty and Nick Bermudez announced that there will be a display at Morrison's Chapel from 09/09/02 through 09/13/02 honoring the lives lost at the World Trade Centers on 09/11/01. There will be a wall display that will have the names of the victims. A book will also be available where individuals may find a name and release a balloon in their memory. Volunteers will be needed to help while the memorial is open. After 09/13, the wall will be moved to Lehman Park for continued viewing. Nick and Joyce stated that this is a work-in-progress and they would appreciate any ideas. They want to honor our police and firemen in some way during this as well. It is likely that this will become a permanent display, possibly in the fire department. Contact Joyce or Nick if you can help.
  • Nick Bermudez also noted that only 4 names got scratched off the list for bringing raffle gifts at this meeting. Members please bring two gifts to Nick or the club will have to buy them.

Raffle:  Tim, Andy, and Dave took the prizes today.

Fine Master:  Lisa Marie Andersen was the Fine Master.

Bell Ringers -  Tim Doran: He was called just before the meeting and his well diggers hit water! He was fined $1.00 for each gallon per minute. Don Heydlauff: Turned 60 on Saturday. He suggested a fine of $1.00, although others thought it should be much higher! Phil Toohey: Will be putting a flag on the Continental Divide for the St. Helena Rotary Club on Saturday. The flag will be at 14,000 feet, thus, a $14.00 fine.

Imposed Fines -  Fines were imposed on 7 individuals during the meeting as Lisa Marie asked pertinent, thought provoking questions about agricultural economics. Many others got fines as a result of not wearing their Rotary pins!

Rotary Meeting Notes -- July 23, 2002

Natalie Klug

Natalie Klug

Natalie Klug opened the meeting with a moving dedication. Having just returned from a trip to Central America, Natalie reminded us of our good fortune to live in such a blessed and bountiful country.  Terrific chef's salads from the Silverado Brewery awaited the members – a good choice for a warm summer day in July.

Visitors for the Week:

No visiting Rotarians joined us, though Tim Coon brought a guest for lunch. A lack of a piano player and the loss of President Epps to the podium did not deter the Welcome Singers, who not only welcomed Rotarians to the meeting, but also serenaded Rex Stults on the occasion of his birthday. Rex was the only Rotarian celebrating a special day.

Hendrik Smeding

Announcements:

Members were reminded that the Teachers BBQ is scheduled for August 23rd from noon to 1:30 and that volunteers are needed for set up and break down. Contact Hendrik Smeding to volunteer.  Other dates to remember include the St. Helena Citizen of the Year Dinner honoring Jake Scheideman, among others, is scheduled for August 24th, and a surprise birthday party for Ernie Navonne . For more info on the birthday party call Lisa Marie Andersen.

Raffle:

The black marble went unclaimed for another week. Next week, the winner will have a one-in-eight chance of sending a big check to their Paul Harris Fund, so buy lots of tickets.

Tim Coon

Tim Coon

Fine Master:

Tim Coon played Fine Master. Somehow, in only the third week of the new year, we already have two bleeding hearts – Lisa Marie Andersen and Paul Krsek earned the honor this week. Tim dug up some interesting trivia about everything from bra sizes to the poisonous nature of poinsettias (actually, they are not) and succeeded in harvesting a fair batch of fines.

Program: Club Assembly

The program today was Jeff Epps' assembly to outline the goals for the year. This year's theme is "Have Fun, Get it Done" and Jeff has outlined a number of projects he wants to accomplish. In addition to mounting another successful Winter Ball, Jeff has

Jake Scheideman

Jake Scheideman

set renovating the kitchen and meeting area at the Native Sons Hall, completing work on the Teen Center and working with Jake Scheideman to build a playground in Nicaragua as his prime objectives. Each of Jeff's Board Members then spoke briefly about their goals for the year.

The Nairator will be featuring brief articles from each of the Directors over the next few months. Instead of highlighting each presentation, keep an eye on the bulletin to learn more about your club.
