ST. HELENA STARTS
A NEW YEAR
By Jim Haslip

JOHN SALES, Club President 2006-2007

JOHN SALES
Club President 2006-2007

BILL WORD

BILL WORD
Past President

July 11, 2006. Bill Word looked relaxed and happy; John Sales was a little nervous; and our foreign exchange student, Swantje Paragenius, was sad to be leaving us but anxious to return home to her beloved Germany. A new year began with President John assuming the task of getting our rowdy club to quiet down long enough to say the flag salute.

Swantje just got back from another Rotary-sponsored trip and provided our program as her farewell. Using slides and many comments laced with nostalgia, she took us on a tour of the Germany she loves. The tri-colored flag represents the country's motto of unity, justice, and freedom. Their Chancellor is a woman named Horst Kohler. There are 16 states and the population is 1/3 Catholic and 1/3 Protestation with a sizable Turkish minority. She lives near Bergen am Rhein where river tours take you gliding past castles and old churches. Her private, girls only, Catholic school features river racing in 8 person sculls. German schools have 9 years required followed by 3 choices of specialized high schools.

Swantje's time at St. Helena included her selection as Prom Queen. She adjusted so quickly that one of her teachers asked, "Aren't exchange students supposed to be quiet?" For her senior project, she rowed across San Francisco Bay in 35 minutes.

Rotary trips were a highlight of her experience which allowed her to meet other exchange students and Rotarians from all over northern California. Her trips included the Trinity River, Mt. Shasta, and skiing in Tahoe. She attended a horse show, a Giant's game, and the Winter Ball. She hiked down the Grand Canyon and back in a single day, an improbable feat. (Did I mention that she ran a marathon in her first attempt before coming here?) We will miss you, Swantje and the feeling is mutual.

Member Profile:
ROB ANDREAE

ROB ANDREAE

ROB ANDREAE

Having spent 13 years as a member of St. Helena Rotary Club, Rob Andreae's fondest memory is of accompanying Don Heydlauff from Stanford Hospital in a limousine just days before Don's passing. He joined five fellow Rotarians and they laughed "all the way." His dedication to the community has been shown not only in the compassion and brotherhood he showed Don, but also in leadership in the community, serving as President of St. Helena Rotary, Chair of Community Foundation, St. Helena Chamber of Commerce, and even the Children's Hospital of Oakland Foundation. He was just recently named "St. Helena Citizen of the Year" by the St. Helena Chamber of Commerce.

Rob was introduced to Rotary by fellow Rotarian Jim Wright in 1992, and he joined soon thereafter. He notes that the club's commitment to major projects, especially international projects, is one of the biggest improvements he has witnessed since he joined. He credits Rotary with benefiting his life by giving him a "heightened sense of commitment to community and service."

Rob is an investment advisor with partner and fellow Rotarian, Paul Krsek. Rob has been married to his wife, Linda, for 28 years. He is the father of three children: Whitney (25), Caitlin (21) and Scott (18). When not serving the community, he enjoys gardening, golf, travel, and reading.

St. Helena Rotary Foundation Board Meeting - July 11, 2006
By Donn Black

New President John Sales gaveled the meeting to order at 11:06 am. After approval of minutes of the June 13 meeting and review and discussion of the Foundation Balance Sheet of July 10, funding requests were considered and approved as follows:

MARGO KENNEDY

MARGO KENNEDY

1. $1,800 to the St. Helena Recreation Department for Free Swim Day; 2. $600 to support the Kid Scoop Newspaper in Education program; 3. $600 to the Acorn Soupe organization. A request for funding of Daniela Vosti's trip to a medical conference at Georgetown University was denied.

Margo Kennedy was nominated to fill the Board vacancy. Approval deferred to August meeting pending discussions with Margo or other interested members.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:50 AM with the next meeting scheduled for August 8, 2006 at 11:00 AM at the Native Sons Hall.

RELAY FOR LIFE
Set for September 16th and 17th
By Polly Keegan

July 27, 2006. Guests included Jeff Behring, past president of Danville Rotary, and current head of the Wheelchair Foundation who was introduced by Phil Toohey, and Linda Schulz, Chairman of the Up Valley Relay for Life who was introduced by Doug Ernst.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CHUCK MEIBEYER

CHUCK MEIBEYER

Jake Scheideman recognized Chuck Meibeyer for three years of service as Treasurer of the Rotary. Jake noted how much time and effort that was involved, and thanked Chuck and his daughter Cody for all their many contributions.

Doug Ernst asked for a repeat of names of those who were planning to participate in the Relay for Life. Linda Schulz spoke for a few moments regarding the two most important recognized deterrents to having cancer – don't smoke, and exercise frequently. Calistoga is setting a goal of $20,000 for the Relay for Life event, and asks that St. Helena take that as a challenge. The funds are used for research, education, advocacy and patient support services. Linda composed a wonderful little theme song for the event, and I expect we will hear it all weekend on September 16th and 17th.

Alan Fowler reminded us to bring in our raffle gifts, and asked that any changes in the roster that he passed around last week be given to him. Otherwise we are all expected to remember to participate in our scheduled setup/breakdown/invocation and other responsibilities, and find our own replacements if we are unable to make that particular commitment.

SUZAN RADA

SUZAN RADA

Suzan Rada ordered pedometers that should be arriving next week. Regarding the kayaking, she is negotiating with Napa River Adventures to arrange this health and fitness event.

Phil Toohey asked Jeff Behring to say a few words about the Wheelchair Foundation. Jeff said that his dad's goal is to deliver 1 million wheelchairs around the globe. Currently, the number is at about 520,000. Phil presented a check to Jeff for $1,090 for Napa wheelchairs. St. Helena Rotary has been responsible for delivering about 3000 chairs via four shipments to Nepal and Mongolia. Grace Church has separately been responsible for delivering over 1000 wheelchairs through its Outreach Committee.

PROGRAM: ERIC GERHARDT AND THE BALE GRIST MILL

ERIC GERHARDT

ERIC GERHARDT

Eric Gerhardt has been most notable because of his distinction of having been a teacher for 31 years, and he has taught in every one of the five School Districts. Eric is retired, but now serving as "miller" for the Bale Grist Mill. (Grist, by the way, is any grain prepared for milling). Eric was able to give us a lot of very interesting historical information about the Grist Mill, and is alerting the Rotary to their new fundraising campaign, to recreate the "Second Story" at the Mill, originally the creation of Edward Turner Mill born in 1810. The campaign hopes to amass $100,000 for the Mill.
