KATHLEEN PATTERSON - Club President 2004-2005

KATHLEEN PATTERSON
Club President 2004-2005

August 3, 2004 – President Patterson presided over the business portion of the meeting. Howard Huff was introduced. He managed the dictionary program for the valley third graders this year.

Tim Doran introduced his guest, Star editor, Doug Ernst. He lives in Napa but is looking to relocate in the St. Helena area. We appreciate the fine article on the club that the paper published recently. Vince Van Dyke was the guest of Norm Mitroff.

The raffle winners were Al, Joice, and Bonnie. Linda Beard-Delucchi announced that one of her twins, aged 16, has finished high school and is enrolled in college. The other "bell ringer" was by Hendrik Smeding who completed a difficult 100-mile bicycle race.

Fine Master, Donn Black, enjoyed harassing Rotarians who couldn't identify the authors of these quotes: "I can resist everything but temptation" (Oscar Wilde); "I still get butterflies but I get them to fly in formation" (Helen Hayes); "Money doesn't always bring happiness. $10 M doesn't bring any more than $9 M" (Hobart Brown); and "Truth is the enemy of power and power is the enemy of truth" (Edward Abby).

Kathleen urged everyone to bring their families next meeting to hear a moving story told by a Rotary family, which has been intimately involved in the polio eradication effort. Brad Howard will be here with his 2 teenagers.

Gary Jaffe reminded everyone about the Mare Island golf tournament on Wednesday, August 11.

ASHER RABOY - Conductor of the Napa Symphony

ASHER RABOY

Asher Raboy, conductor of the Napa Valley Symphony, led us through the early history of "rock music", starting with that well-known radical, Beethoven, and the heartthrob, Hans Listz. Asher introduced the new concert series that begins in October. By January, the beautifully renovated Lincoln Theater should be available. It's time to get season tickets and preferred seating. The new theater will be the largest in the valley and hold 1200 patrons (compared to 500 at the Opera House). The fully professional orchestra of 80-90 members will be joined by special guests, including Burt Bacharach (January 29), Sergio Mendes (April 9), and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (next June 25). "Peter and the Wolf" is performed on April 16 with many other enjoyable offerings throughout the season. Call 226-8742 to order tickets and reserve seating.

Phil Toohey, Club President 2003-2004

PHIL TOOHEY
Club President 2003-2004

Former President Phil stood in for President Kathy who was traveling and opened the July 27th meeting by introducing Visiting Rotarians PDG (Past District Governor/Permanent Dinner Guest) Franz Wartenweiler of Napa Sunrise. Next was Don Hester of Long Island, his Club's Youth Exchange Coordinator, Sue Andrieux of Napa with her guest Tracy Calkins of WestAmerica Bank in St. Helena, Guest Speaker Neysa Hinton of Sebastopol and her daughter Jordan and Herb Salinger of Calistoga. Norm Mitroff introduced his guest, Vince Van Dyck.

The Welcome Singers sang Happy Birthday for Rex Stults, Kathy Zelazny and Steve Rivas. Mark Terrell announced the golf tournament August 30 (sign up sheet) for the Napa Museum and Phil Toohey the Wheelchair Foundation Fundraiser August 28, after which he's leaving with Father Mac on September 9 to Nepal to deliver more wheelchairs to Katmandu. Diane Bylund reminded members to provide two raffle gifts valued about $25 each by the end of August, and said she had emailed to all members their respective lunch

assignments for the coming year and expected everyone to perform or find a substitute. Suzan Rada announced there are 25-30 Rotary baseball caps to be picked up by members who ordered them earlier and extras are available at $8.50, and that from now on the monthly bike ride will be held the last Sunday of each month and will start from Crush on Main Street at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Craig Anderson reported new computer virus attacks on Google and the leading search engines and again urged members to keep their virus protection up to date. Phil Toohey announced the planned dinner August 16 in Napa for 20 couples at $40 per head.

KATHY ZELAZNY

KATHY ZELAZNY

Kathy Zelazny won the raffle but not the black marble and the other winners were Herb Salinger and Polly Keegan.

Phil Toohey subbed for the missing FineMaster and quickly handed out arbitrary fines to volunteers and non-volunteers, including Rob Andreae, Lisa-Marie Anderson, Paul Krsek, Susan Rada, Natalie Klug, Debbie Victoria-Seale, Bert Johansson, Norm Alumbaugh and Diane Bylund for various and sundry perceived offences.

PROGRAM: THE VITAL IMPORTANCE
OF LITERACY

Acting President Phil introduced Guest Speaker Neysa Hinton from Sebastopol Rotary and her daughter Jordan who has just completed fifth grade. Citing the importance of literacy Phil told of his own experience of difficulty in reading from dyslexia in his earliest school years and how frustrating and discouraging it had been. Neysa began by telling how she and her husband had actively read to Jordan as a pre-schooler, then showed a video on Sebastopol Rotary's "Read to Me" program (see http://www.sebastopolrotary.org/communityservice.shtml ) where volunteers read for one hour one-on-one sessions to school children with reading difficulties. The video included photos of herself reading to Jordan at age four. But when Jordan started school she had difficulty reading on her own, so Neysa got her into her Club's "Read to Me" program and by third grade Jordan was reading at grade level. Now having finished fifth grade Jordan is in the 98 th percentile of reading proficiency and getting straight A's in her reading and English classes.

NEYSA & JORDAN HINTON

NEYSA & JORDAN HINTON

Researchers know that children who are read to in early childhood will learn how to read sooner, and there is no more important skill than reading in today's world. People unable to read face a hard life, to say nothing of what they miss in enjoyment and satisfaction, and as Neysa and Jordan showed, if discovered early, programs like "Read to Me" can help a child acquire good reading skills through coaching and support by caring adult readers.

"Read to Me" costs Sebastopol Rotary $5000 a year ($3000 for the organizer who is a school board trustee and $1800 for books). Neysa closed with the question of what else could we do in an hour that would make as much difference. It's a good question, and members interested in setting up a similar program in our community can contact Neysa Hinton at work (584-1058) or home (829-7591). Can anyone really overstate the importance of being able to read?
