St. Helena Rotary Welcomes
District Governor Terri Clark
August 13, 2002

Tim Doran's Goals as Club Vice President

As St. Helena Rotary Vice President, this year my major goal is to continue our excellent work in membership.  Last year we won "Best Club of the Year" in our district.  That clearly raises the bar for the coming year, and we will have to be

Tim Doran, Club Vice President 2002-2003

Tim Doran
Club VP 2002-2003

quite diligent to meet our expectations. Working together with Bill Word, as membership chairman, we will continue our tradition of recruiting the brightest members of our community.

Another of my key objective is to smoothen a new member's transition into the club.  One change I will be making is to immediately assign our new members to a committee.  In addition to helping the club meet its goals for the year, it will give new members a greater sense of involvement and worth, increasing their likelihood of making Rotary a life-long vocation.

As you meet people in your work and personal life, think about whether they would be good candidates for the club.  We are looking for dedicated men and woman who want to make a difference in their communities by helping the club meet its goals and objectives.   If there is someone you know who you think would make a great Rotarian, please let me know.

We have known for a long time what a great club we have and the good work we do for St. Helena. Let's continue to show District 5130, our "greatness".

Rotary Meeting Notes -- July 30, 2002
by Steve Yost

Announcements

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIPS - Don Scully suggested our members either:

  1. Consider donating to existing scholarships (such as Elwood Mee, Kevin Bailey, etc.) or

  2. Consider setting up their own scholarship based on some need the member identifies as something they would like to support (such as a disabled student, a minority student, etc.)

Please contact him for other ideas or to set your scholarship in motion. He also asked for volunteers to assist his committee.

Colin Ware, Club Service Director 2002-2003

Colin Ware

GOLF OUTINGS - Colin Ware said we will have golf outings to Mare Island on August 15th and the St. Helena Hospital Tournament at Napa Valley Country Club on September 16th. Contact him to sign up.

WINTER BALL - The co-chairs were unavailable so Colin shared with us the committee met last week and decided the theme for this year's event will be "A Night In Havana" so stoke up on your cigars or whatever.

RIVER RAFTING - Andy Bartlett asked for a volunteer to drive exchange students to a river rafting weekend scheduled for August 23-25. Phil Toohey quickly accepted (and attempted to get outdoorsman Father Mac to go along but to no avail).

LADIES BOCCE - Kathy Parrett would like you to contact her if you are interested in playing on a ladies bocce team.

No Black Marble

Miles Metzger won the raffle but alas had no luck in picking that black one. If you haven't donated prizes yet time is running out. Please get them to Nick Bermudez.

Finemaster - Al Albright

He got Phil Toohey and Mike Smith on what was Rotary's first service project -- you guessed it -- providing toilets where needed. Dick Popko missed, but Linda Beard-Delucchi correctly answered there were 49 Rotarians who worked on the charter for the United Nations.

BellRingers

Jeff Epps - something about how he complained to Bert Johansson about the number of cars parked at the high school due to a flea market in session. Miraculously, the next day they were gone.

Mark Terrell - sold his St. Helena house to Joice Beatty who says she may make it into a rental unit. Will Mark now join the Napa Club?

Bob Lamborn - his daughter Peggy recently returned from Ecuador and was eloquent about how Rotary was everywhere doing good deeds and projects. He also wanted us to know The Napa Valley Wine Library Association is having a function at Silverado CC on August 11th where 125 wineries will be pouring. Will Bert's troops be outside the gates waiting?

Kathleen Patterson - has just returned from a 21-day trip to Russia where she worked with Grace Episcopal Church and other volunteers at an orphans summer camp located four hours by bus from Moscow. She thanks all the people who donated time or money to help make this experience a success.

Steve Carbone - just returned from Maine where he exchanged banners with the Booth Bay Harbor Club. Are all of you aware we have St. Helena banners in our storeroom? These can be used for exchanges with faraway clubs.

Rob Andreae - gave statistics (like $1,000 of WorldCom stock in 2001 would be worth $16 now) and concluded if you drank a thousand doors worth of Budweiser beer and recycled the cans you would be money ahead. So his firm has a new motto "Drink Heavily and Recycle".

Organizing And Controlling Your Email

Heidi Paul of Freerun Technologies, Inc.

Heidi Paul

This was the title of the talk Heidi Paul gave at our July 30th meeting. She spent quite a bit of time discussing SPAM (unsolicited email usually sent out in bulk) and how sleazy marketers can take advantage of you. Most of us now use email and many times we don't want spam.

If something says you can unsubscribe don't do it as the sender can track the fact you responded, thus your email address is valid and can be sold to other marketers. In fact, don't even open any message unless you know the sender.

To help get rid of spam you can contact your ISP and for a small monthly fee they will screen out spam. They have a rating system to accomplish this task. Or, you can set up a filter on your computer.

Another option is having two email addresses: one for home and one for business. Only open messages at home from senders you know.

For further information you can contact Heidi at Freerun Technologies Inc., 2160 Jefferson Suite 201, Napa, CA 94559, 707-265-1835 X 103, www.freeruntech.com.

Rotary Meeting Notes -- August 6, 2002
by Colin Ware

On a somewhat hot and muggy afternoon, the club convened in the Native Sons Hall for the year's first Craft Day. Lunch was particularly noteworthy, with our friends at the Silverado Brewing Company exceeding all expectations with a wonderful grilled King Salmon in a fresh peach and berry sauce. Perhaps word got out in advance. Tuesday's meeting was a sell-out, without a spare seat to be had.

Jeff Epps, Club President 2002-2003

Jeff Epps
Club President 2002-2003

After welcoming several guests, including Past District Governor Franz Wartenweiler, President Jeff Epps reminded everyone that District Governor Terri Clark will be visiting on the 13th. So that Terri can attend a Board Meeting, August's will be held on Tuesday the 13th at the Women's Club in St. Helena.

The list of honors for Past President Dick Rogers continued. Franz was on hand to present Dick with the Presidential Citation for a Distinguished Rotary Club. This award goes hand-in-hand with the Club of the Year honors that the St. Helena Club earned last year.

During announcements Rotarians were reminded that the Teachers' barbecue is on Friday the 23rd.  Anyone wishing to help set up should contact Hendrik Smeding. Also, the year's first golf fellowship outing will be held on August 16th at Mare Island Golf Course. There is still one spot left to play one of the area's newest and most challenging runs. Call Club Service Director Colin Ware to sign up.

Bob Herrick was Finemaster for the day. A trend which seems to have been developing over the past few months continued, with bellringers taking up almost all of the allotted time for fining.

Save the Date!

Fellowship Dinner
Tuesday, September 24th

This fall's Fellowship Dinner will be held on Tuesday, September 24th at the home of Pam and Gary Jaffe . There will be no lunch-time meeting that week. More details to follow.

Jake Scheideman led off the parade with a report on his most recent trip to Nicaragua, Bob Lamborn (Honorary President of "Republicans for Dillon") fined himself to raise awareness of the Wine Library tasting event this coming Sunday and Linda Beard-Delucchi announced that her teenaged daughter has been accepted as a Napa Police Department cadet. All members who have recently vacationed were also asked to contribute – both money and some words about their travels.  Members enjoyed recounts of trips to the Caribbean, Alaska and a fly fishing hole whose location is still secret, and likely to remain so!

This week's program featured two of the Club's newest members in Craft Day presentations.

Wendell Laidley, founder of New Media Learning gave the group a good overview of distance learning.  Wendell's company delivers courses over the Internet. Focusing on human resource related materials, the company has had good success with its program on sexual harassment, designed to be taken by employees at the companies purchasing the program. With training budgets on the decline, the market for distance learning is growing. Currently, over $60 billion is spent on continuing education and training in the country. Distance learning is starting to take a bite out of that number, and is likely to continue growing.

The keys to good distance learning programs are excellent content and well-conceived interactivity. All of Wendell's programs also include tests, just like classes taken in person. Wendell's sexual harassment program can be purchased for your company, and is available for free to small businesses up to 50 employees.

Miles Metzger, owner of Miles Metzger Studio on Main Street spoke next. Miles is a visual artist who specializes in sculpture. Miles shared with the club his background and talked a bit about how art became both his life and his living. Highlights included several of Miles sculptures, discussions on how bronze sculptures are made, and a hat collection with each chapeau symbolizing either important periods or important people in Miles' life.

Members can visit Miles' studio on Main Street – all of the sculptures on display are also for sale.

Special thanks to Miles and Wendell for participating in the Craft Day. There will be several more this year, so contact Rob Andreae or Colin Ware if you would like to be a presenter. Also, special mention goes out to Bert Johannson whose quick thinking in the line of duty helped save the day. Bert, on ten minutes notice, provided a digital projector when the original one conked out.
