On a somewhat hot and muggy afternoon, the club convened in the Native Sons Hall for the year's first Craft Day. Lunch was
particularly noteworthy, with our friends at the Silverado Brewing Company exceeding all expectations with a wonderful grilled King Salmon in a fresh peach and berry sauce. Perhaps word got out in advance.
Tuesday's meeting was a sell-out, without a spare seat to be had.

Jeff Epps Club President 2002-2003 |

After welcoming several guests, including Past District Governor Franz Wartenweiler, President Jeff Epps reminded everyone that
District Governor Terri Clark will be visiting on the 13th. So that Terri can attend a Board Meeting, August's will be held on Tuesday the 13th at the Women's Club in St. Helena.
The list of honors for Past President Dick Rogers continued. Franz was on hand to present Dick with the Presidential Citation for a Distinguished Rotary Club. This award
goes hand-in-hand with the Club of the Year honors that the St. Helena Club earned last year. During announcements Rotarians were reminded that the
Teachers' barbecue is on Friday the 23rd. Anyone wishing to help set up should contact Hendrik Smeding. Also, the year's first golf fellowship outing will be held on August 16th at Mare
Island Golf Course. There is still one spot left to play one of the area's newest and most challenging runs. Call Club Service Director Colin Ware to sign up. Bob Herrick
was Finemaster for the day. A trend which seems to have been developing over the past few months continued, with bellringers taking up almost all of the allotted time for fining.

Jake Scheideman led off the parade with a report on his most recent trip to Nicaragua, Bob Lamborn (Honorary President of
"Republicans for Dillon") fined himself to raise awareness of the Wine Library tasting event this coming Sunday and Linda Beard-Delucchi announced that her
teenaged daughter has been accepted as a Napa Police Department cadet. All members who have recently vacationed were also asked to contribute – both money and some words
about their travels. Members enjoyed recounts of trips to the Caribbean, Alaska and a fly fishing hole whose location is still secret, and likely to remain so! |

This week's program featured two of the Club's newest members in Craft Day presentations. Wendell Laidley, founder of New Media Learning gave the group a good overview of distance
learning. Wendell's company delivers courses over the Internet. Focusing on human resource related materials, the company has had good success with its program on sexual harassment, designed to be
taken by employees at the companies purchasing the program. With training budgets on the decline, the market for distance learning is growing. Currently, over $60 billion is spent on continuing education and
training in the country. Distance learning is starting to take a bite out of that number, and is likely to continue growing.

The keys to good distance learning programs are excellent content and well-conceived interactivity. All of Wendell's
programs also include tests, just like classes taken in person. Wendell's sexual harassment program can be purchased for your company, and is available for free to small businesses up to 50 employees.
Miles Metzger, owner of Miles Metzger Studio on Main Street spoke next. Miles is a visual artist who specializes in sculpture. Miles shared with the club his background and talked a bit about
how art became both his life and his living. Highlights included several of Miles sculptures, discussions on how bronze sculptures are made, and a hat collection with each chapeau
symbolizing either important periods or important people in Miles' life. Members can visit Miles' studio on Main Street – all of the sculptures on display are also for sale.
Special thanks to Miles and Wendell for participating in the Craft Day. There will be several more this year, so contact Rob Andreae or Colin Ware if you would like to be a presenter. Also,
special mention goes out to Bert Johannson whose quick thinking in the line of duty helped save the day. Bert, on ten minutes notice, provided a digital projector when the original one conked out.
