FRANK TOLLER
St. Helena's Citizen of the Year
By Polly Keegan

Congratulations Frank! He sure did look happy as he received all the many, many guests paying tribute to his years of service and dedication to the community. (He was also very pleased when the belly dancer floated by him!). It was a huge turnout at the Zinfandel Ranch of Trinchero Family Estates. (Rex Stults had to wonder however, whether it was the lower price of entry rather than the fame of Frank that brought out all these people.)

This was not your typical Citizen of the Year dinner – it was a very fun party. The belly dancer, then Hans and Franz who normally pump up people felt that Frank ought to be "plumped" up. The singers were great, and the tributes were warm and wonderful. Joel and Chelsea performed a dual poetic ballad reminiscing about a camping trip with their dad about 20 years ago. Bonnie Long, Rob Andreae, Diane Dillon all spoke glowingly, and Paul Krsek brought in original redwing shoes from Minnesota. Pam Rubio from Wells Fargo Bank who chairs the Chamber Board of Directors presented the award to Frank. Events like this are amazing in that they garner so much support from the community, in terms of guests who attend, and from the businesses who sponsor so much of the "goods" – Wells Fargo, Trinchero Family Estates, The St. Helena Star, and so many more!

Teacher's Bar-BQ Again a Big Success
By Wendell Laidley

August 18, 2004: Our annual St. Helena School District Teachers Bar-BQ was well attended on a beautiful summer day at Crane Park with President Kathleen welcoming the teachers and recalling her own experience in teaching third grade and that her two sons had both gone through St. Helena Unified. After the Pledge of Allegiance joined by the teachers and Miles Metzger's invocation, she introduced new Superintendent Allan Gordon, who in turn introduced Interim High School Principal Ed Morrison and the new teachers who have arrived this past year.

President Kathleen then introduced our two Rotarian former Superintendents Roger Adams (25 years) and Jim Haslip (16 years) and other members Al Albright who retired from a career in the system and John Harrington who worked in it for several years.

To familiarize our guests with the mission and work of Rotary President Kathleen gave a short historical perspective on Rotary's first one hundred years from its founding in Chicago in 1905 as the world's oldest service club through its dynamic growth to its current status as an important worldwide force for the good of all mankind.

President Kathleen then called on Youth Service Chair Roger Adams to present awards. Roger began by thanking Bruce Frank and the School District Leadership for their help with Rotary's work with high school students, and how Bruce had helped with the RYLA camp this summer. Roger then joined President Kathleen in presenting Bruce with his Paul Harris Fellowship award and the significance of the honor.

President Kathleen closed the meeting by again thanking the teachers for their important work in our community.

MIKE THOMAS

Mike Thomas once again revealed his infinite courage and grace in the wake of the death of his daughter, Carrie. Carrie passed away on June 6, 2004 after a long battle with chronic pain syndrome. Mike conveyed his heart felt thanks to the Club and the community for all of the support that he and his family have received. He then announced that his family would fund a Paul Harris in honor of Carrie, and he further pledged $100 toward his Paul Harris. Fellow Rotarians were so incredibly moved by Mike's words and actions that they rose to their feet and gave him a standing ovation.

Linda Beard-Delucchi announced that her father has finished

Kathleen Patterson stated that the trial regarding the attack on her parents finally concluded last week and that the sentence should be handed down shortly. One of the defendants has already pled guilty. She pledged $100 to her Paul Harris.

Jim Haslip made 5 separate pledges of $20 each in honor of the various travels and achievements of his children, as well as for the trip to Spain with his wife and the jazz choir.

Jeff Epps pledged $50 in honor of the construction of his new house and his dealership renovation.

Gary Jaffe announced that he went to Southern California to celebrate his father's 90th birthday.

BRAD HOWARD & FAMILY OVERCOME EARLY OBSTACLES
TO GIVE HEART WARMING PRESENTATION

Brad Howard, past Rotary District Governor, brought his entire family with him to speak about their involvement with Rotary and how it has enriched their lives. Prior to the presentation, chaos almost broke out at the head table when Brad's teenage children saw dessert being passed around to Club members. Calmer heads prevailed, however, when the chocolate pudding arrived at the head table. Brad then began the presentation by thanking all of those gathered for being Rotarians and asking the question: "Why are we here?" "Many of us are here because of the motto 'Service Above Self.'" …Someone's cell phone then chimed in, followed immediately by the ringing of a pay phone that most at the meeting never even realized was a fixture in the room. Brad continued on undaunted and the rest of the presentation went smoothly.

Brad explained that the "Service Above Self" concept has lead to the global presence of Rotary Clubs who provide aid for such causes as the eradication of disease, and the provision of housing and wheel chairs to those who are so desperately in need. But, with all of this benevolence and creativity, there is no line of people waiting to join Rotary. Why? People make excuses like they don't have enough time or money. To Brad, this speaks to one issue: priority. Brad believes that Rotary, as an organization, needs to let people know what it means to be a Rotarian. We need to remind ourselves of what Rotary brings to us and how it has enriched our lives. Brad described his travels to West Africa with his family to participate in the eradication of polio.

Brad's wife, Marcia Howard went on to discuss how Rotary has given her family priceless life experiences: the opportunity for world travel and to truly give someone a future. As a mother, Marcia is proud of her children's commitment to Rotary and how they changed other children's lives with the polio vaccine. Rotary has meant a smaller, more personal world for them.

BRAD HOWARD & FAMILY

THE HOWARD FAMILY
MARCIA, EVAN, BLAIR, HOWARD

Fourteen year old Evan Howard also spoke about how Rotary has changed his life. He has traveled the world to help vaccinate kids and get wheel chairs to people in need. He has made lasting friendships with those he has helped.

Finally, young Blair Howard spoke about the trip to West Africa with her family and how she learned that helping people is important. Brad concluded the presentation by stating that Rotary is a great vehicle for exposing families to other cultures and for teaching them the importance of helping others. He asked that Rotary members search out people with families and show them how Rotary can help them by providing them with the opportunity to help others.

Golfers Galore
By Steve Yost

Led by Gary Jaffe, seventeen Rotarians assaulted the very tough Mare Island Golf Course on Wednesday, August 11 th in an attempt to come as close to par as possible. The weather was sunny and windless; the views of the bay, Mt. Tam, and the Vallejo area were breathtaking. All our players have handicaps and these were taken into consideration for scoring purposes.

There was plenty of excitement out on the course. Mike Thomas actually birdied the par 3 eight which gave him a net double eagle – very rare indeed. Good job Mike.

When all the strokes were counted (massaged?) the team of Rob Andreae, Alan Fowler, Paul Krsek, and none other than our leader Gary Jaffe won the day with a score of 137 so first place money came their way. Right behind in second place were Tim Doran, Dale Smith, Mark Terrell, and Steve Yost with a 139 score. The rest of the field was also rans but all of us had fun.

After the golf we drove to Don Giovanni's wonderful restaurant where we enjoyed a gourmet meal accompanied by many fine wines brought by our members. Goodwill permeated the atmosphere as lots of good natured stories were told and Miles Metzger even did a little advertising by passing around his colorful brochure. Ex DM Franz Wartenweiler who had joined us for the day introduced us to his three lovely daughters who were having dinner at the restaurant.

Gary says he is busy planning another golf outing for September, so be ready.
