DIANE'S TEAM WINS THE DAY

On August 28th Jeff Epps led 16 Rotarian golfers down to the hills and valleys of The Course at Wente Vineyards. This is one beautiful place to play golf -- it is located up against the southern hills of the Livermore Valley.

The team of Diane Dillon, Miles Metzger, Bob Herrick, and Sean Wickersham took top honors in the 2-person best ball competition. Jeff Epps's team, which included Gary Jaffe (of star gazing fame), Mike Thomas, and Steve Yost, were second.

By the way, Sean shot 80 on this very demanding course. There was some animal activity: Mike and Steve almost ran over a snake as they rode up one of the many hills in their golf cart.

Jim Wright made the dinner arrangements. We dined in style right at the Wente Restaurant where we consumed copious bottles of Napa Valley wine and enjoyed a delicious meal.

OVERHEARD AT THE TABLE
Tim Doran
says to Diane some Republicans are OK. Her reply, "I know that. I'm married to one!"

Thanks Jeff and Jim for arranging the fun golf outing.

Mars Is Almost In Our Laps
By Rose Camp

At our August 26th meeting Gary Jaffe invited all Rotarians and their families to come to his house during the late August nights to see through his high-powered telescope the planet Mars, which is as close to Earth as it has been in the last 60,000 years! As a result of the announcement many did indeed take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity. THANKS GARY!

Visiting Rotarian Gene Kelly announced that his Napa Noon Club is sponsoring a Business Speakers series. He invited St. Helena Rotary members to sign up for the September 9th premier event. This is a great opportunity to hear one of our business leaders speak in the Napa Valley. Let's support our neighbor and sign up!

CRAIG ANDERSON SAID TO UPDATE YOUR COMPUTER VIRUS PROGRAMS. THE SOBIG VIRUS IS A BIG DEAL AND WEEKLY UPDATES ARE ADVISED!

"My Vacation" was Tim Doran's  topic for fines.

  • Diane Dillon announced her son's wedding. Her son and his new wife both attended Cal Poly but met after they both graduated.
  • Bert Johansson announced the new Chief of Police Robert.
  • Rob Andreae returned from vacation to find out that his son was smoked out in Montana, and his daughters were in the dark from the power outage in the northeast. The frosting on the cake was finding out, as he delivered his daughter for her first semester at the University of Colorado, that it had just been voted number one party school in the nation.
  • Andy Bartlett announced that he will become a grandfather. His vacation started in the dark during the power outage!
  • Joice Beatty visited friends in Melrose, Montana at the Sportsman Fishing & Hunting Lodge. She did not mention anything about prize -- winning elk or bear…maybe on her next trip!
  • Nick Bermudez has been to Forrest Lawn twice – dropped in to see friends for a cold one and stayed the weekend!
  • Steve Carbone made a trip for a lobster fix to Booth Bay Harbor to visit family and sail.
  • Bob Herrick went to Mendocino. He did not mention climbing to the top of any mountains, sailing, or fishing. He looks happy so maybe just doing nothing was the order of the day!
  • Chuck Meibeyer went to a family reunion in Michigan and spent time fishing and golfing!

FOREIGN EXCHANGE ACTIVITIES

Andy Bartlett

Andy Bartlett

Andy Bartlett introduced the St. Helena High School Interact Club President Isabel Bouliney, the incoming foreign exchange student Karianne Blanck, and rebounding foreign exchange students Sarita Lopez and Jessica Hoffeld. Andy mentioned that Rafael Cruz is our outbound exchange student this year and he is in France.

Isabel Bouliney started off by saying that her brother peaked her interest in the Interact Club. The club does not have any members yet, but Isabel hopes to have 9 or 10 very soon!

Karianne Blanck is from Oslo, Norway. She will be attending St. Helena High as a senior. She has a 14-year-old brother, and a 27-year-old half-brother. Both her parents are lawyers and are Rotary members! This is her first time in the United States. She is a basketball player and is looking forward to playing on the team.

Sarita Lopez spent the school year in Chile. She said that the entire school had 500 hundred students and included grades from kindergarten through high school. She taught English to younger children. She is almost fluent in Spanish now, and continues to communicate with a fifth grader, who became a very good friend, by email and phone.

Rotary Youth Exchange
Sarita was hesitant to go. At first she did not think that she would get in as she had been told that spots were very limited. She had only a short time to get ready once she found out she was going. When she did arrive, she met several other students at a party before school started that helped her settle in. She did get sick from the water, which made the first day of school a bit rough.

Sarita said that her school year in Chile is the best thing that has ever happened to her, and is very appreciative of what she has after coming home. She thanked Rotary very much!

Jessica Hoffeld spent half a year in Germany. She stayed with three families. The first was in Wolfenbuttel with a couple who are architects with five children. There she learned German from the younger children. The second home was in Salzgitter with a Hunter/Forrest Ranger and his wife a house-mom and teacher.  She went to a school that had 800 students. The third home in Thiede was her favorite. Her family there took her on trips throughout Germany.

Crane Park & St. Helena Citizens of the Year
By Wendell Laidley

Phil Toohey, Club President 2003-2004

Phil Toohey
Club President

President Phil's 7th Lend-a-Hand meeting on August 12th saw no visiting Rotarians but Hendrik Smeding brought Ron Sculatti of Mario's clothing store and Amelia Claire shoe store as our lone Guest.

After the Welcome Singers President Phil reported the successful Wheelchair Foundation campaign raised more than the targeted $4900 so the $2500 petition to Rotary International will be rescinded. He then requested and got membership approval to apply the extra $1600 of the $6500 received to unallocated funds for future use.

The next Board meeting will be September 11 (second Thursday of every month) at noon. Jerry McQuiddy reported on the pending SHOW ROTARY circular in the five Napa Valley newspapers and circulated a signup sheet for advertising support after thanking the 18 members who already signed up. He also asked for volunteers to write articles to show our community what our Club does. Nick Bermudez reminded members their two raffle prizes at $25 each are due NOW. Kathy Patterson reported that Suzan Rada had volunteered to Chair the new Family of Rotary Committee that our International President has recommended to all clubs. Kathy asked all to inform Susan of members who might be candidates for a call. After Andy Bartlett reminded all of the pending arrival of exchange student Karianne Blanck from Norway next week, Gary Jaffe repeated his previous invitation to members to view Mars as it passes closer to Earth than it has been in 60,000 years on August 28. Gary said there's plenty of room between August 20 and 27 and to call 963-5752 to set up a time for his observatory.

Bill Word

Bill Word

Bill Word won the raffle and picked the black marble for $100, which he asked be applied to his Paul Harris account. Dave Brotemarkle and Hendrik Smeding were the other winners.

FineMaster Jim Wright showed no mercy in fining members left & right for all manner of sins, real or imaginary. No excuse saved anyone as he systematically piled on Nick Bermudez, Tim Coon, Bob Lamborn, Jeff Epps (bleeding heart who passed it on to Dave Brotemarkle), Hendrik Smeding, President Phil ($2 for each Hi Five), Andy Bartlett, Gary Jaffe, Paul Krsek, Frank Toller (for the marriage of his favorite child – apparently not Joel) and Bill Word, for winning the raffle. One nervous member muttered that in so ruthlessly meting out the fines Jim looked like he might almost be a banker.

CRANE PARK PLAYGROUND

Rex Stults

Rex Stults

Rex Stults then introduced Guest Speakers Jeannie Kerr and Denise Steiner, 2003 Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year for their outstanding achievement in the new Crane Park playground equipment. Rex applauded their quiet persistence, and couldn't resist mentioning how many more nominations were received this year than when Bob Trinchero won the award few years ago. But Rex then softened and thanked Bob for hosting the upcoming Citizens of the Year award dinner at Trinchero Family Estates, where Paul Krsek will serve as M/C.

Jeannie Kerr began their presentation saying how Denise and she felt they didn't know where to start, but after they got going were pleasantly surprised and grateful for the excellent community backing and support they received. She expressed particular appreciation for help from the City staff, and for Kathy Patterson's support. Jeannie explained the scope of the project and its objective to improve the equipment's safety after the accident when Dr. Ali Vaziri's ring caught in a protruding nail on the slide and severed part of his finger. Denise Steiner then spoke about the design of the equipment and their reasons for selecting the vendor. The final project has been an outstanding success and is being actively used by lots of children, as their presentation showed.

Perhaps the best proof was Rex Stults's comment on his surprise at seeing his wife and children at Crane Park one day and asking her why they had come all the way from Napa. Her spontaneous answer was "It's the best children's playground in the Valley," and our Citizens of the Year have earned their award.

Rotary Teachers BBQ A Big Success!
By Morris Minton

The annual BBQ for the teachers of the St. Helena school district was well attended by approximately 150 teachers and administrative staff on Friday the 22nd of August at Crane Park. The festivities were opened by President Phil Toohey in the usual manner, followed by a welcome to all attending.

Gina Santangelo, School District Superintendent

Gina Santangelo
School District Superintendent

School District Superintendent Gina Santangelo was introduced by President Phil. The superintendent then introduced new teachers and staff hired this year, and ALSO ANNOUNCED ALL TEACHERS TERMINATED BECAUSE OF THE CRISIS IN CALIFORNIA'S BUDGET HAD BEEN REHIRED. THIS IS GOOD NEWS!

A plaque of appreciation was presented to the St. Helena Rotary from the school district for its ongoing support.

Thereafter, the formal meeting was adjourned so that all could enjoy the wonderful BBQ meal. Thanks to all Rotarians who supported this community event.
