President Phil's 7th Lend-a-Hand meeting on August 12th
saw no visiting Rotarians but Hendrik Smeding brought Ron Sculatti of Mario's clothing store and Amelia Claire shoe store as our lone Guest. After the Welcome Singers
President Phil reported the successful Wheelchair Foundation campaign raised more than the targeted $4900 so the $2500 petition to Rotary International will be rescinded. He then requested and got
membership approval to apply the extra $1600 of the $6500 received to unallocated funds for future use. The next Board meeting will be September 11 (second Thursday of every month) at noon.
Jerry McQuiddy reported on the pending SHOW ROTARY circular in the five Napa Valley newspapers and circulated a signup sheet for advertising support after thanking the 18 members who already signed up.
He also asked for volunteers to write articles to show our community what our Club does. Nick Bermudez reminded members their two raffle prizes at $25 each are due NOW. Kathy
Patterson reported that Suzan Rada had volunteered to Chair the new Family of Rotary Committee that our International President has recommended to all clubs. Kathy asked all to
inform Susan of members who might be candidates for a call. After Andy Bartlett reminded all of the pending arrival of exchange student Karianne Blanck from Norway next week, Gary Jaffe
repeated his previous invitation to members to view Mars as it passes closer to Earth than it has been in 60,000 years on August 28. Gary said there's plenty of room between
August 20 and 27 and to call 963-5752 to set up a time for his observatory.
Bill Word won the raffle and picked the black marble for $100, which he asked be applied to his Paul Harris account. Dave Brotemarkle
and Hendrik Smeding were the other winners.FineMaster Jim Wright showed no mercy in fining members left & right for all manner of sins, real or
imaginary. No excuse saved anyone as he systematically piled on Nick Bermudez, Tim Coon, Bob Lamborn, Jeff Epps (bleeding heart who passed it on to Dave Brotemarkle),
Hendrik Smeding, President Phil ($2 for each Hi Five), Andy Bartlett, Gary Jaffe, Paul Krsek, Frank Toller (for the marriage of his favorite child – apparently not Joel) and Bill Word,
for winning the raffle. One nervous member muttered that in so ruthlessly meting out the fines Jim looked like he might almost be a banker. |

CRANE PARK PLAYGROUND
Rex Stults then introduced Guest Speakers Jeannie Kerr and
Denise Steiner, 2003 Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year for their outstanding achievement in the new Crane Park playground equipment. Rex applauded their quiet persistence, and couldn't
resist mentioning how many more nominations were received this year than when Bob Trinchero won the award few years ago. But Rex then softened and thanked Bob for hosting the upcoming Citizens of
the Year award dinner at Trinchero Family Estates, where Paul Krsek will serve as M/C.Jeannie Kerr began their presentation saying how Denise and
she felt they didn't know where to start, but after they got going were pleasantly surprised and grateful for the excellent community backing and support they received. She expressed
particular appreciation for help from the City staff, and for Kathy Patterson's support. Jeannie explained the scope of the project and its objective to improve the equipment's safety after
the accident when Dr. Ali Vaziri's ring caught in a protruding nail on the slide and severed part of his finger. Denise Steiner then spoke about the design of the equipment and their reasons
for selecting the vendor. The final project has been an outstanding success and is being actively used by lots of children, as their presentation showed. Perhaps the best proof was Rex Stults's
comment on his surprise at seeing his wife and children at Crane Park one day and asking her why they had come all the way from Napa. Her spontaneous answer was "It's the best children's playground
in the Valley," and our Citizens of the Year have earned their award.
