TOBIAS ROSE STOCKWELL: CAMBODIA WATER PROJECT
by Wm. J. McIlmoyl

TOBIAS ROSE STOCKWELL

TOBIAS ROSE STOCKWELL

Kids these days! What an outstanding young man Tobias is, and what outstanding things he is doing in Cambodia. Having traveled there as a sight-seer in search of these incredible temples that have overgrown by jungle, he was taken in by some Cambodians and moved by compassion to help them any way he could.

War torn and ravaged by Pol Pot, Cambodia has been devastated in many ways and is now in the process of rebuilding. Key to that process is water. Potable drinking water, water for irrigation, Tobias saw the greatest need right away and set himself to do something about it. With the help of local Monks and villagers, he has put together a vision for rebuilding a waterway, kind of like a dam, that will enable rice farmers to successfully grow their crops and generate income. He is also working on water purifiers made quite simply with sand and purifiers that will give locals clean drinking water.

Support of this young man's work is a great privilege and, again, a concrete reminder of the difference our local club is making in the world.

We were across the street in the Newton Room at Grace Church on this beautiful August day. President Sales was up in Alaska capturing as much salmon as the state laws allowed, so our meeting was chaired by President-elect Chuck Meibeyer. With great faith, we recited the pledge and were led in prayer by Beverly Mes.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Jim Wright gave a heads up for the 9/14 Golf outing at the Napa Valley country Club. It involves Kiwanians, so we need to be on our game.

Jim Haslip again mentioned the Ryan Collins Donor Program, and made everyone aware of how life-saving this program is and can be.

Doug Ernst brought attention to the Relay for Life, a fund raising effort for the American Cancer Society.

Joice Beatty talked up the "polio in Africa" project. You can go on this mission and help eradicate the beast. The dates this year are 10/29 – 11/8.

FINEMASTER

Dave Brotemarkle was the man today, and the subject was golf. But not before a mountain of bellringers: Jim Wright, Jonathan Briano, Chuck Meibeyer, Beverly Servaas-Mes, Norm Alumbaugh, Lisa Marie Andersen, Stephanie Johnson (just married), Jim Haslip and Doug Durward all had great stuff happen for them, and they were glad to pony up for their Paul Harris in a spirit of gratitude.

On to the fines:

Joice Beatty actually knew that Tiger has just won the PGA last weekend.

Bert Johansson knew it was the 12th for Tiger.

Suzan Rada was fined for not knowing that Anika holds the female title for most major wins wing 10.

Of course Jeff Epps knew that Jack had 18 to lead the guys.

Otty (Wm. Alston Hayne) knew you had to be 50 to play for the Seniors.

Jim Wright knew that the Ryder Cup was between the US and Europe.

I can't remember if Tim Doran knew the origin of the Walker Cup. It was the great grandfather of President Bush.

And thank goodness, Alan Fowler knew that the next Rotary gold event was Monday at Bodega Bay.

Great job, Dave! Well under par for the course! And Jeff put the pin back in the hole by telling us why there are 18 holes to a golf course: because there are 18 shots in a bottle of booze! Makes sense.

Rotary Shows Appreciation for Local Teachers

Allan Gordon, superintendent of the St. Helena Unified School District, along with several members of his administrative staff and dozens of teachers, were guests of the St. Helena Rotary Club on Aug. 15. The annual barbecue, held at Crane Park, is designed to show appreciation to local educators.

Gordon thanked the Rotary Club, and especially Jeff Epps and Rob Andreae, for their work in generating community support for the Don Heydlauff Memorial Park, part of the Rotary Centennial Project. He also introduced several staff members in attendance.

Guests included Charles Henning of the Calistoga Rotary Club and Guilherme Mendes Thomaz, an exchange student from Brazil.

"I am certain I will have the best year of my life here," Guilherme told the gathering.

NATALIE P. KLUG

NATALIE P. KLUG

Whether she is traveling to Guadalajara to attend the Rotary Festival of Brotherhood or finishing 8th (out of 33!) in the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation Race for Research in San Francisco, taking her daughter Rachel to college in Vermont, or conducting her own CPA business right here in St. Helena, Rotarian Natalie P. Klug is a woman on the run.

As a self-described "mother on a mission," she has relished the ability to not only work alongside her fellow Rotarians, but play alongside them too. She reports that she cannot seem to find enough time to devote to her playful side: skiing, traveling, tennis and other adventures and escapades. She also enjoys being the mother of "two wonderful daughters" – Kayla, a 17 year old senior at St. Helena High School, and Rachel, a 19 year old college student.

Natalie became a member of the St. Helena Rotary Club on June 22, 1993, having been introduced to Rotary by a fellow CPA Dannie Hendricks. Her fondest memories of Rotary include traveling abroad and participating in the international outreach of Rotary, and she considers it an honor just to be included.  Natalie was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow in 2000.

DISTRICT 5130 CHRONICLES
(History of District 5130)
by Erna Stevenson, District Governor

ERNA STEVENSON

ERNA STEVENSON
District Governor 2006-2007

Henry J. "Bru" Brunnier was the originator of the district concept in Rotary. In 1914 Bru divided approximately 100 Rotary Clubs in the United States into 13 Districts. At that time Rotary had not gone international. The District concept was adopted in 1915 at the San Francisco Convention. Our District (The West) was #13 and included New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Hawaii and the Philippines. District 5130 had the following earlier numbers: District 13 1915-1918, District 23 1918-1922, District 2 1922-1937, District 104 1937-1949, District 155 1949-1957, District 513 1957-1989 and District 5130 1989-present.

Our District has a golf tournament each year honoring Bru Brunnier at the District Conference with the winning team being awarded the Bru Brunnier Trophy at the District Conference Sports Dinner. Let's have 20 or more teams at the 2007 District Conference in Rohnert Park. So all you golfers encourage your Clubs to enter 4 man/women teams so we can once again have a "big" tournament honoring Bru Brunnier!

Service Opportunities

The Club is considering the addition of a new position – Historian. The deeds of today can be collected to serve as a record and inspiration for those who follow.

For others who feel the call to serve, the club still has openings for the positions of Job Shadowing (Local Projects) and for the Festival of Brotherhood (International Projects).

If you are interested in undertaking any of the positions identified above, you are strongly encouraged to contact President John Sales and/or any member of the Board of Directors.

The Rotary Foundation Needs You

Friends of the Foundation:

LUIS VICENTE GIAY, The Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair, 2006-07

LUIS VICENTE GIAY
The Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair, 2006-07

During the 2006 RI Convention in Malmö-Copenhagen, The Rotary Foundation Trustees announced a US$120 million Annual Programs Fund goal for 2006-07, based on projected estimates from more than 12,000 clubs. The Foundation will do its utmost to reach this goal. Knowing that leadership by example is the most effective incentive, at the beginning of this Rotary year all of the trustees affirmed their personal commitment by each contributing between $100 and $10,000 to the Foundation.

Is $120 million an overly ambitious goal? No, because it's in line with the normal growth rate that we have seen during the last few years. Moreover, in reaching it, we will be very near to making Every Rotarian, Every Year a reality.

Increasingly, every day, The Rotary Foundation needs Rotarians. It needs you! The world's problems are on the rise, and the number of projects proportionately increases. The demands that will come our way will pose greater challenges. An obvious example is the PolioPlus Partners program, which covers a portion of the social mobilization expenses associated with the National Immunization Days held in those countries in which it is still necessary to vaccinate children against polio. Here is where districts can really help by donating a part of their District Designated Fund, and clubs can choose among their options and participate in funding the expenses essential to the success of the program. It's estimated that there will be a shortfall this year of about $3 million, so by supporting PolioPlus Partners, we make it possible for Rotarian and non-Rotarian volunteers to help.

Our goals for 2006-07 are important and realistic. On behalf of The Rotary Foundation Trustees, I urge you to help through your Foundation contributions. Please continue to increase your level of support to the Foundation. It needs each one of you to take action so that its good works may reach every corner of the globe. Many are waiting for us to reach out.

Cordially,

Luis Vicente Giay
The Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair, 2006-07
