District Governor
Visits St. Helena Rotary

District Governor Terri Clark visited St. Helena Rotary on Tuesday, August 13th, joining the members for a wonderful chicken lunch from our friends at the Silverado Brewing Company. Terri was joined by her associates, Jim Flamson, DCC, and Erna Stevenson, AG.

Terri Clark, District Governor 2002-2003This was her first visit as District Governor. President Jeff Epps hosted Terri for a wonderful meal at Auberge Du Soleil on Monday night, and then invited her to attend the Club's monthly Board meeting the following morning. After the club's business was concluded, Terri sat down and listened to each of the Board's officers and directors outline their goals for the year. District Governor Clark was particularly impressed with the Club's international commitments this year, and visited Jake Scheideman's bike shop to see the television program recently produced on the baseball field in Nicaragua. She helpfully pointed out some possible funding opportunities and award possibilities to the various board members and re-emphasized the importance of reaching our Polio Eradication goals.

A large group welcomed Terri at the Native Sons Hall. Jeff Epps welcomed visiting Rotarians from Calistoga, North Napa and Paradise Valley, Arizona. Too many birthdays and anniversaries to recount here were celebrated -- suffice it to say there are many Leos in the St. Helena Rotary. And, finally, Natalie Klug picked the black marble in the raffle. Next meeting will find a full box of marbles facing the lucky raffle winner.

Special mention must be given to Joel Toller, the week's Finemaster. Rising to the occasion, Joel, nattily dressed in an old white t-shirt and jeans, used the Finemaster soap box to tell three of perhaps the worst jokes heard at Rotary in quite some time. In recognition of his fine work and careful preparation, Joel was fined $50 by our esteemed president, rewarding Joel amply for his outstanding performance.

Terri Clark then took the podium, and introduced herself to the membership by talking about her personal experiences in Rotary's Four Avenues of Service in her home community of Eureka as well as her progression from new member to District Governor in less than ten years.

District Governor Visit ... continued

As District Governor, her priorities are:

1.  Be Effective by meeting Rotary's ongoing commitment to:

  • Grow membership
  • Grow contributions to the Foundation
  • Encourage clubs to increase their commitment to community
  • Develop leadership throughout the District

2.  Enhance Communication by spreading the word about successful projects throughout the district, both within and outside of Rotary.

  • In particular, raise awareness about our clubs' terrific work with:

       - international youth exchange

       - the dictionary project

       - mentoring of the District's youth

       - the literally hundreds of projects completed
         by individual clubs each year.

  • Encourage clubs to contribute to the Wheel News, mailed to each Rotarian in the District

3.  Successfully meet Rotary's goals for Polio Eradication and annual giving to the Rotary Foundation: Inform every Rotarian about the importance of Rotary's renewed commitment to eradicate Polio completely. For those who are not aware, Rotary has embarked on a major fundraising campaign to raise $80 million for the "Polio Eradication" campaign.  Rotary's campaign to eradicate Polio has been 99% effective. This campaign will support work to vaccinate children in the remotest corners of the world, finally putting an end to this terrible disease.

To help encourage Rotarians to both meet this extraordinary goal and support the foundation, Terri has had a special pin commissioned that will honor these "double sustainers," those who make their $78 gift to Polio Eradication and their annual gift of $125 to the Foundation. At the end of the presentation, she honored several St. Helena Rotarians who pledged to make these gifts with the special pins.

4.  Mount a successful Group Study Exchange: This year Rotary is sending a Group Study Exchange team to Vietnam, one of the first times that a non-Rotary country has been visited. The trip has very rigorous humanitarian goals. Our area in the District has been asked to identify experts in water quality and sanitation to send on this trip. DG Terri, and Rotary International, would like to see Vietnam return to the international organization. It his hoped that this trip will not only make real contributions to that country's quality of life, but perhaps even lead to the formation of clubs once again in this South East Asian country.

5.  Invite all Rotarians to the District Conference on the Northern Coast of California, achieving 100% representation of the clubs in 5130.

Terri ended her presentation by asking all of the members to visualize a world where children grow up healthy and safe, where they know only peace and non-conflict, and where plagues and destruction are just distant memories.

Rotary Meeting Notes -- September 3, 2002
by Colin Ware

Jeff Epps, Club President 2002-2003

Jeff Epps
Club President 2002-2003

President Jeff Epps opened the meeting by welcoming visiting a host of guests, including a fellow Rotarian from Napa Sunrise, Natalie Klug's daughter and Tim Coon's wife Teresa and sister Catherine, and Lia Bentinelli, our returned exchange student from Florence. Andy Bartlett also brought the new president of Interact at the High School, and her teacher advisor. All enjoyed the lasagna from the Silverado Brewery.

We broke with our normal routine to hear a brief presentation by Catherine Coon , Tim Coon's sister, who spoke about her work in Uganda on behalf of street children. Last winter, Tim let us know that Catherine had been in touch with Rotary clubs in Uganda, and that members had helped her gain access to very important contacts within the Ugandan government. Rotary is very active in Uganda, with 17 clubs in Kinshasa alone.

Tim Coon, Community Services Director 2002-2003

Tim Coon

Street children are a major social problem in Uganda, one of the poorest countries in Africa. Uganda is a country ravaged by years of civil war and epidemic levels of AIDS.  Women run many families, but there is little sense of collective responsibility for the many children left orphaned by war and disease. Catherine has been working to find these children medical care, get them into school, and even re-unite them with their families. Rotary has been instrumental in her work, and she thanked the members for being part of a critical and vital institution.

Nick Bermudez

Nick Bermudez

Nick Bermudez followed, announcing that volunteers will be needed on September 11th for the memorial for the victims of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks last year. Members can call Nick at Morrison to volunteer for the event. Other St. Helena civic groups are also helping out.

Dave Brotemarkle

Dave Brotemarkle

Dave Brotemarkle took the podium to perform his Finemaster duties. Delayed for two weeks because of the presentations around Jake Scheideman's guests from Nicaragua, Dave proceeded to quiz unlucky Rotarians about the Chamber of Commerce. In what is fast becoming a St. Helena tradition, bell ringers, however, took center stage.

  • Jeff Epps paid for Tim Coon's announcement of his new car purchase (from Epps Chevy)

  • Linda Beard-Delucchi announced that her daughter has realized a long-dream of purchasing a horse

  • Andy Bartlett honored Al Albright, somewhat indirectly with a story about his daughter and her new boyfriend

  • Wendell Laidley shared the news of his successful eye surgery; and

  • William Thompson shared with the club that he had been robbed at the bank.

Bert Johansson

Bert Johansson

Finally, after Police Chief Bert Johannson failed to explain how the crooks got away in the terrible summer traffic, the few Rotarians left who had not rung the bell answered what were actually, fairly difficult questions about the activities of our local chamber. When David was over, Jeff fined the current president of the Chamber, $50 for "promotion" of the Chamber.  Dave didn't complain.

Andy Bartlett introduced the day's program, Lia Bertinelli, returned exchange student who spent her year abroad in Venice. Lia shared images and memories of her time in Italy with the members, who were very interested in the country's education system and the future of Venice -- widely believed to be sinking into the bay.
