President Jeff Epps rang in the meeting, welcoming our program guests from St. Helena Junior Achievement and Treasurer Bob Wandel's brother.

Announcements followed with the sad news that fellow Rotarian Norm Pott, interim pastor for the First Presbyterian Church passed away on the first of September following a long illness. He will be remembered fondly in the St. Helena community. Joel Toller, this year's co-chair for the Winter Ball, gave the group and update on February event, inviting Rotarians to join him and Steve Yost in finding a hot Latin band for the evening. Anyone with ideas or bands for consideration should call Joel or Steve.

Joice Beatty and Nick Bermudez reminded the members about the September 11th memorial service at Morrison Funeral Home, inviting all to volunteer and attend a special memorial service.

Jim Wright

Jim Wright

Jim Wright took over the podium as the week's finemaster. As has become something of a lunchtime tradition, once again bell ringers were plentiful. Charlotte Williamson announced that she has become the instant mother of her 12-year old goddaughter, pledging dollar for each year of the young woman's life. Earl Rogers pledged $20 in honor of the wonderful meal he had with our exchange student Analise from Belgium.

Mr. Wright then challenged chosen Rotarians to say something nice about another Rotarian. Those unable found themselves a bit lighter in the

wallet. Joel Toller complimented Ottie Hayne on his organic gardening prowess (though Joel did imply that Round Up might be found in Mr. Hayne's shed), Lisa Marie complimented Gary Jaffe on his incredible telescope and Bob Wandel found something nice to say about his brother. Finally, Linda Beard thanked her father, Ed Beard, for his support and advice.

The week's program featured Craig Underhill, a partner in Dave Brotemarkle's accounting firm. He is this year's chair of Junior Achievement and came to speak about the organization's efforts in the Napa Valley.

For those not familiar with JA, Craig showed a video highlighting the mission and accomplishments of this national organization. JA exists to teach young people basic economic principles and start giving them entrepreneurial skills by letting them actually start, run and close a business. One of JA's most important goals is to motivate kids to stay in school by showing the value of education. Over 4 million young people in the United States are involved with Junior Achievement.

The Napa Valley chapter of Junior Achievement is in the midst of a five-year initiative that will have them reaching over 5,000 students in the Valley. Already, more than 2,500 children in both elementary and high school grades participate in both classroom and extra-curricular programs.

Craig invited members of Rotary to join JA as teaching volunteers. Right now, fourteen volunteers are needed in St. Helena public schools. The time commitment varies from five weekly hour-long sessions for elementary school students, to eight-ten hour-long commitments for middle grades and high school.

In addition to in-class volunteers, another worthwhile program is also seeking people to help out. JA staffer Lori Swain also coordinates Project Make Sense, a mentoring program for students in grades three through six. Funded in part by Sutter Home Winery, Project Makes Sense strives to offer at-risk kids with much-needed one-to-one instruction, better study skills and the drive to excel in school.

Rotary Meeting Notes -- September 17, 2002
by Colin Ware

It must be harvest time because Tuesday saw one of the year's lowest turnouts. One visitor joined us, Shawn Wickersham of Napa Land Title, a guest of Joel Toller.

After the welcome singers serenaded our birthday and anniversary celebrants, Rich Shurtz rose to honor the club's two Bocce Ball league teams. In particular, he brought awards for the team comprised of Dick Rose, Mike Thomas, Hendrik Smeding and Margo Kennedy who finished in 4th place overall.

Don Heydlauff was the week's finemaster. Bell ringers included Colin Ware , pledging $20 to celebrate the opening of the Culinary Institute of America's Center for Professional Wine Studies; Elaine John, announcing another successful hospital golf tournament; and Mike Thomas "celebrating" the rat infestation he found in his two automobiles. What's another $20 when you are looking at thousands to replace hoses, belts and vents?

After the bell was rung, Don singled out Natalie Klug, Elaine John, Margo Kennedy, Steve Yost and Hendrik Smeding with questions about alternative tools for certain jobs. Natalie, for instance, did not know that cool whip makes a nice hair conditioner in a pinch, and Steve was unable to identify Efferdent denture cleaner as a good way to remove sweat stains.

The week's program featured Jerry Alexander, a local grape grower and photographer. Jerry spoke about an United Nations initiative, "Peace One Day" a day of global cease fire. In addition to trying to stop armed conflict for 24 hours, "Peace One Day" will give humanitarian organizations a chance to visit populations that are often difficult to reach due to combat and violence.  People around the world will be invited to join in a universal prayer for peace.

The long-term goal of the Peace One Day coalition is an end to armed conflict throughout the world. They hope that they can show that if we can get through one whole day without fighting, we might be able to do without forever.

Local observances of the cease-fire are scheduled for Lyman Park in St. Helena, with an invocation and quiet march around the town. An afternoon-long barbeque followed by a candelight ceremony end the day here in the Valley.

For more information on Peace One Day's goal of a world without armed conflict, please call Biz Sherman at 963-0546 or Sharie Renault at 963-5784.

Rotary Supports St. Helena Hospital Association
by Jim Wright

The St. Helena Hospital Foundation's 13th Annual Harvest Invitational Golf Tournament was held September 16, 2002 at Napa Valley Country Club. The St. Helena Rotary Club had nine members that played on that warm Monday afternoon in support of our local health center.

Rotary #1 was comprised of Jeff Epps, Rob Andreae, Paul Krsek and Dave Brotemarkle. Rotary #2 was comprised of Diane Dillon, Steve Carbone and Chuck Meibeyer. This team had one no-show. No one would play with Mark Terrell and he was sent to another team. Being one of the co-chairs of this event, I played with the elite group of Pat Garvey, Walter Raymond and Dave Zumwalt.

Thanks to everyone that participated in the event.  A good time was had by all.
