Our Jake Receives Award
From Dali Lama
By Ima Holcomb

November 11, 2005. Lunch was served and President Bill Word began the meeting by announcing that there were some changes to the planned meeting and that we had some very special guests.

Stephanie Johnson from Wells Fargo Bank was inducted into Rotary by the inimitable Alston Hayne. Her sponsor is Chuck Meibeyer and we welcome Stephanie wholeheartedly.

JAKE SCHEIDEMAN WITH SPECIAL GUEST

Jake Scheideman, in a very moving introduction, made everyone aware that our guests were people who had been honored by the Dali Lama in a special ceremony on Saturday, November 6, 2005 in San Francisco for their humanitarian work in the world today…and included in those honored was also our very own Jake Scheideman!

PHIL TOOHEY WITH SPECIAL GUESTS

PHIL TOOHEY WITH SPECIAL GUESTS

Phil Toohey spoke regarding the work that he has done in the Nepal region, the conditions of the people, and introduced our special guests: Dolma, a Tibetan Budhist, and Sagine. Sagine who is a 34-year-old woman who spoke briefly about two of her humanitarian projects, which were two homes she founded for disadvantaged orphans in Kathmandu.

CAMP RYLA PARTICIPANTS WALKER RYAN
AND DOMINIQUE OLEA WITH CYNTHIA BROWN

Roger Adams introduced the Camp RYLA Rotary sponsored scholarship winners, Dominique Olea and Walker Ryan, both high school students at St. Helena High School. They presented a PowerPoint presentation noting the benefits of the program and spoke about what they gained from their one-week experience in the Camp RYLA, camp for leadership. Both walked away with a greater sense of self-esteem and Walker wants to continue on and attend a film school in Southern California while Dominique learned not "to limit herself" based on the words and comments of others and to extend herself with a greater sense of confidence.

Jake Scheideman spoke again of his experience of being honored by the Dali Lama and the 46 other honorees. He provided us with a sense of the Dali Lama's sense of humor when recounting the Dali Lama's response to a question regarding "how to raise a child?". After very well thought out comments, the Dali Lama admitted that "he had no idea how to raise a child"! When asked what one should do when visiting Nepal, the Dali Lama's response was "to smile at the Tibetans and travel to the remote areas of Nepal".

As the time would not permit, there were no Bell Ringer or Fine Master activities.

An Autumn Barbeque At Copia
By Jim Haslip

MARK TERRELL

MARK TERRELL

November 1, 2005. Light jazz drifted through the air as Rotarians and guests assembled at the COPIA gardens for a chicken barbeque luncheon (prepared in the outside kitchen by Silverado Brewery) that preceded a guided tour. Mark Terrell made the arrangements and only mentioned Kabota tractors one time as he introduced the program! Arthur Jacobus noted that COPIA sits on a 12-acre campus with 3 ½ acres of ornamental and production gardens. The American Center for Wine, Food, and the Arts has envisioned a significant transformation of the surrounding area. A Westin Hotel is expected next door in the spring of 2007. A 65,000 sq. ft. building, known as the Oxbow Market, will allow for a daily Farmers' Market.

The tour wound its way through the Salad Garden, the Kids' Garden, and to vineyard and vegetable trials. There is a Wild Garden to attract beneficial insects, varied orchards, and wine flavor simulation areas. Cultural gardens celebrate the uniqueness of various area preferences, including Asia, Mexico, Native America, and Italian. There is an olive grove, nut trees, and an herb garden.

TONY ALBRIGHT

TONY ALBRIGHT

During the business segment, President Bill reiterated the Club's debt of gratitude to Jeff Epps and Rob Andreae for the Centennial project. Doug Ernst was thanked for the excellent coverage by The Star. Tony Albright was the event's MVP for his selfless assistance.

The Rotary District Foundation Dinner is November 19th. Phil Toohey urged us to come and dress like our favorite rock star! Then, prepare to win the lip sync competition and have a great time!

The Balls Fly At Eagle Vines
By Steve Yost

PAUL KRSEK

PAUL KRSEK

On a November day that started sunny and mild but later turned to cloudy, windy and cool, members of our club and their guests separated into 4 foursomes and took on the Eagle Vines Golf Course. It was no contest – the course won.

Paul Krsek, who is on a roll right now, organized the outing. He developed the "Krsek Scoring System" but as it turned out it didn't help his team win first place. The results were:

  • At 131 – Jim Haslip, Dave Brotemarkle, Rob Andreae, and Tim Doran.

  • At 133 –  Jonathan Briano, Terry Mahoney, Tom Coleman, and Jeff Maib tied with the foursome of Jim Wright, Paul Krsek, Fred Robedee, and Mike Thomas.

  • At 138 – Mark Terrell, Alan Fowler, Steve Yost, and John Sales.

  • Low Gross - 83 – Terry Mahoney (by the way, he carries a 7.2 index).

After the golf many of the players, armed with a bottle of wine, adjourned to Bistro Don Giovanni for an early dinner.

Paul says we are planning another outing, this time to Bodega Bay on December 14th. More details to follow.

Rotary Membership Moments

Week 20 – November 13 – 19, 2005   Have new members assigned to a committee that plan their own fund raising and/or club social event.  This has worked well in larger, older clubs, new members can plan an event that everyone can help with or it can be exclusively theirs.  It will give them ownership of a project.

Remember a Rotarian that is involved
stays a Rotarian.

Week 21 – November 20 – 26, 2005 – (U.S.A.) Thanksgiving is a time for all of us to give thanks to that person that sponsored us into Rotary.  At this week's meeting, if possible, shake their hand and thank them for this wonderful opportunity they have given you.  Have you sponsored someone into Rotary?  If not make that your next Rotary project.  Thank you for being a Rotarian.

Happy Thanksgiving

Week 22 – November 27 – December 3, 2005   Rotary opportunities abound.  Leadership training and opportunities exist at the club and District level.  The 96 Rotary Fellowships are where like-minded folks gather to talk about their profession or favorite hobby. Community service, international travel to see and participate in humanitarian projects, meeting and entertaining GSE team members and so much more.

Enjoy what Rotary has to offer.
