PRESIDENT-ELECT
BILL WORD PRESIDING
WHILE KATHLEEN IN MEXICO
By Jim Haslip

BILL WORD - Club President-Elect

BILL WORD
Club President-Elect

November 9, 2004 – President Kathleen Patterson is in Mexico for the Festival of Brotherhood so President-Elect Bill Word presided.

Jim Wright served as Fine Master with only a few minutes of notice that he had the job. Well done, Jim. By the way, am I the only one he didn't fine?

Mike Thomas missed the black marble as the first winner in the raffle but seemed happy with the bottle of wine. Diane Bylund reminded everyone that we are required to bring in two gifts for the weekly raffle or we are charged and the club makes the purchases.

PROGRAM:  RYLA WITH KAITLYN AND GABINO

Don't you wish you had the enthusiasm of Kaitlyn and Gabino? Our recipients of the RYL (Rotary Youth Leadership) awards shared their experiences at the Bodega Bay camp last summer. They were accompanied by the high school counselor, our recent Honorary Paul Harris Fellow, Bruce Frank. Kaitlyn Reedy and Gabino Lopez shared pictures of the many activities that centered on the camp's purpose of promoting youth leadership. They had motivational speakers on college, assertive decision-making, relationships, and leadership. They showed scenes of public speaking, skits, and a talent show. They were impressed with the premise that there are only two emotions: love and fear. Andy Bartlett introduced the students and presided over the drawing of raffle tickets that netted in $1281 for the Interact Club.

Today's Program Appropriate On Election Day
By Kathy Zelazny

November 2, 2004 – President Patterson opened the meeting with another presentation of "A Day in the Life of Rotary International." She described for the Club a day spent in the

Cook Islands by fellow Rotarians who volunteered their skills as medical practitioners to provide corrective surgery for cleft palette and other congenital deformities. Many of us probably thought of John Sales and his amazing dedication to efforts such as those described by President Patterson.

Lydia Wilson was inducted as a new member at the meeting. Lydia is a goldsmith and jewelry designer who recently opened Marlowe & Company Jewelers on Main Street. Alston Hayne gave her the customary 2 minutes to describe her life and she proceeded to share with us her family's connection to Rotary (her father who was also a Rotarian) and her dedication over the years to several charitable causes. Lydia was sponsored by not one, but two Rotarians: Tony Albright and Jonathan Briano. Welcome Lydia

Joice Beatty needs the completed surveys from Club members who are 60 years or older. She has received 3 of them back and she will need the rest to be returned to her by November 16, 2004.

President Patterson reminded everyone that meeting assignments for set-up, invocation, fine master and clean up are posted in the Nairator. Members should refer to these assignment reminders and the master list sent out by Diane Bylund to make sure that they, or a substitute, can fulfill these obligations.

PROGRAM:  DR. LARRY JEBROCK ASSISTS WITH CLUB'S VISION

We all might think that we see things clearly, but Dr. Larry Jebrock pointed out that people can have perfect sight and still have bad vision. Although this may be an appropriate statement on election day, Dr. Jebrock was solely addressing the health of our eyes and how we process what we see. Vision considers whether you can remember what you've seen, how your vision is processed, and how you look at words. Dr. Jebrock is a behavioral optometrist who works on restoring eyesight and vision without surgery. He works with behaviors that relate to vision as well. The various programs that are available to restore eyesight and vision include: using overnight shaping lenses, taking Lutein to avoid macular degeneration, doing convergence exercises, using glasses made for the computer, and doing eye training exercises to strengthen your peripheral vision and your ability to remember what you have seen. Dr. Jebrock performs corporate vision consulting that includes a training program for employees at companies so that they are more efficient in processing and remembering what they see. He encourages having children screened for vision processing problems. He would be happy to assist in setting up such a program here in the Napa Valley.
