New Program for Young Girls
Complements Boys & Girls Club
By Doug Ernst

November 15, 2005. Three "girls on the run" gave Rotary members a lesson about a new after-school program intended to help 3rd to 5th grade girls develop a sense of identity, build supportive relationships and engage in community service.

Janet Todd, Erin Przybylinski and Michelle Beard explained that Girls on the Run Napa Valley, based in St. Helena, teaches pre-teen girls about healthy lifestyles and self-respect during twice-a-week after-school sessions that combine running with a whole-person philosophy and a wellness curriculum. Each program is led by a team of trained coaches.

Lessons include how to get along with a group, how to assert oneself in a healthy manner, how to stop a gossip chain, and understanding that what really matters is on the inside, not the outside.

The program, which can be found in 115 cities across the U.S. and Canada, was established in North Carolina in 1996 by Molly Barker, a Hawaii Ironman Triathlete. The goal of her program is to help girls say, "I love who I am today," by helping girls define their values and goals through team building. Through each 10-week program, the girls prepare for the end-goal of completing a 5k (3.1-mile) road race.

The program, which also has the support of Soroptimist International of St. Helena, will be offered after school starting March 13 and continuing through May 20. A session will again be offered next fall. The registration fee is $125. Scholarships are available, thanks to the generosity of donors such as service clubs.

FRANK SOTTILE

FRANK SOTTILE

During a question-and-answer session that followed, Frank Sottile noted that the program does not compete with the Boys & Girls Club. In fact, he said the two organizations have been working together to make sure the two programs complement each other.

For more information, to make a tax deductible donation, to enroll your daughter, or to volunteer your time, write to GOTR Napa Valley, P.O. Box 2002, St. Helena, 94574, or call 968-0692. The e-mail address is info@gotrnapavalley.org.

Earlier in the meeting, Rotarians were thanked for an earlier contribution to the Montessori School. Students Drake, Jessica and Kenna presented the club with a thank-you card including the Rotary symbol.

President Bill Word reminded the club that Rotary Clubs throughout the world do 182,776 projects per year, each involving an average of 13 volunteers and 138.3 hours of work. That figures out to 2,376,088 volunteers working 25,277,920.8 hours.

Ron Sculatti thanked the many club members who sent him their thoughts and wishes through cards and phone calls following the sudden loss of his brother, and was especially grateful to members who participated in the memorial service.

Joice Beatty encouraged members to give generously to the Napa State Hospital Christmas Fund. The fund raised $800 last year, and Joice is hoping to keep pace this year.

Jake Scheideman is selling wine bags manufactured by the club's beneficiaries in Nicaragua. The bags make fine Christmas presents.

Winter Ball co-chair Kelly Crane announced that Winter Ball invitations are going out soon. Anyone who needs an invitation may e-mail Kelly at wb@napavwm.com.

Paul Krsek announced that the next Rotary golf outing will be Dec. 14 at either the Presidio or Bodega Bay.

President Bill Word announced that a Rotary family in Kelseyville, hosting an exchange student from Thailand, lost their home in a fire. Contributions of clothing and funds are being accepted. Contact Bill for more information.

Elaine John announced that $475,000 was raised at the recent St. Helena Hospital Gala. She attributed $75,000 of that to a generous contribution from Mark Terrell.

Polly Keegan received a nice round of applause after she announced she recently celebrated her two-year anniversary of the day she stopped smoking.

Lydia Wilson praised her winning bocce team, which included Suzan Rada, Steve Ebersole, Ima Holcomb, Doug Durward and Kelly Crane.

Rockin' Rob Andreae announced he attended a recent Rolling Stones concert and lived to tell about it.

Mike Smith contributed $250 toward his Paul Harris for the privilege of touring the Salk Institute with former Gov. Pete Wilson, and for lobbying Salk organizers to mention Rotary International's effort to eliminate the disease from the face of the earth.

Wendell Laidley gave $100 toward Bob Trinchero's next Paul Harris because he came away from a recent silent auction with a real steal – a bottle donated by Bob.

Charles Bell announced that Pacific Union College President and fellow Rotarian Dick Osborn was elected to serve as Vice Chair of the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, which will lead to becoming chair in a couple of years. AICCU represents 77 independent colleges and universities in California, including 233,000 students from PUC to such institutions as USC, Stanford, Azusa Pacific, Menlo, Mills, Loyola Marymount and Whittier.

Finemaster Frank Sottile expressed gratitude that the St. Helena Star didn't report anything about the Boys & Girls Club in the previous week's edition. He fined Doug Ernst, then paid the fine himself.

Swantje, Toohey, and Ernst are the
Stars of the Show
By Steve Yost

November 22, 2005. Our exchange student from Germany, Swantje Paragenius, started our meeting by telling us her English is improving, she has traveled a lot in the past month, and her high school soccer team won in the playoffs. She is a happy camper!

Phil Toohey came up with a new twist! Being a Rotarian in a Rotary Club like ours (we do lots of good deeds) allows other people to unconsciously do wonderful things (Phil - I'm not sure I got this right but it sure sounds good). So as a result of our wheelchair to Nepal program the "Wine Women Who Trek" led by Joan Smith and Lindsay Harrison decided to get up a fund for wheelchairs to Mongolia (where I think the next trek will take place). At today's meeting Phil presented Jeff Bering (his family started the wheelchair program) with a check for $12,200 from the ladies. This ought to keep the less fortunate folks in Mongolia rolling for some time as $75 (which will be matched by the Berings) gets one chair. Way to go Phil and the ladies!

Jeff Epps who has done many things for our club and served in many positions including being president for some unknown reason has never been Fine Master until this meeting. How about that?

BELLRINGERS

Joel Toller is happy his 3-month remodel done by Steve Ebersole is completed. Does that mean you are ready for some of us to be houseguests Joel?!

Norm Mitroff pointed out that he received a roster of our club, and 67 names of people were included who are no longer members and 6 have departed our planet.

DOUG ERNST

DOUG ERNST

Doug Ernst, Publisher and Editor of the St. Helena Star , was our speaker for this meeting but it was unplanned ahead of time as the scheduled speaker never showed. Jeff and Doug had some good natured banter about the failure of the STAR to get all the papers from a recent issue of two delivered - apparently Jeff can't run Epps Chevrolet (free plug!) without his newspaper.

Doug did a wonderful impromptu job of telling us about his paper. He said people in small towns across America really care about their local papers - they spend more time with weekly papers than daily ones. His staff is trying to improve the business and editorial pages; they are looking at ways to get more depth in the general reporting and they are looking for ideas from us locals for interesting stories.

The STAR is owned by Lee, Inc. headquartered in Davenport, Iowa. They own 70 daily newspapers and 150 weeklies in our country. When he attended a recent conference, he learned from other attendees the Aunt Helena column in our paper is considered one of the best for weekly papers.

The national goals for weekly papers by the Lee organization include increasing revenue, increasing readership, having more local news, growing online, nurturing employee development, and exercising cost cutting measures. Sounds like any good business operation, doesn't it?

Doug personally is very happy to be part of our community and wants to help out in any way he can. Be sure to come to him with your ideas.

Thank you Doug for giving us a great spur of the moment presentation.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF

St. Helena Board Meeting Highlights
November 17, 2005
By Donn Black

Following approval of the September and October minutes and of a normal amount of cash in the bank, the Board got down to some really serious business:

Rudy Papale got his 30-day LOA (Leave of Absence).

"Kohola Mai" was next approved.  The "Kohola Mai" program at the Maui Club is to make visiting Rotarians (who come over frequently and stay for extended periods of time) "associate" members in that club. They retain their home club memberships where they get attendance credit for attending Maui meetings.

Funding Grants Approved: Girls on the Run--$1000. District 530's Cool Kids Camp--$1,050. Shree Nadarajah, a third year peace scholar at UC Berkeley, $500 (District program).

Community Service, Chair Jim Haslip:  Third Grade dictionaries are ordered and paid for, and distribution to the kids will be implemented before Christmas.

Membership: Doug Durward, attorney sole practice, family law and civil rights, approved.

Winter Ball, Co-Chair Polly Keegan: Good, on-time progress on the February 25, 2006 event. Fund in Need needs a charity. Several possibilities discussed, more to come from members.

Foundation Board: Alston Hayne resigned from the Board, replaced by Gene Armstead.

New Business: $700 approved for purchase of a Rotary air balloon along with 4 other clubs.

Next Board Meeting: Thursday, December 15, at noon, Carnegie Building. All welcome.

Rotary Membership Moments

Week 22 – November 27 – December 3, 2005
Rotary opportunities abound.  Leadership training and opportunities exist at the club and District level.  The 96 Rotary Fellowships are where like-minded folks gather to talk about their profession or favorite hobby. Community service, international travel to see and participate in humanitarian projects, meeting and entertaining GSE team members and so much more.

Enjoy what Rotary has to offer.
 Become a strong Rotarian

Week 23 – December 4 – 10, 2005
Do you know a young professional? Bring them to a meeting or better yet, create a list and bring a group of young professionals to a meeting.  Like ages attract, make your program one that is of interest to them.  Then turn around and ask several of them to be a program at a future meeting. Recruit, recruit!!!

Expose your club to a younger point of view

Week 24 – December 11 – 17, 2005
Rotary meetings can be a wonderful opportunity to train the future leaders of your club.  Create mini leadership training.  Have members old and new introduce speakers (give them written guidelines), teach the organization of your District, have a Rotary information meeting at least once per month, let a new and longer standing Rotarian team up to research and give the program.

Leadership training now,
will build Rotary's future
